Title: I have been to 2 Nhs Birmingham hospitals they will not offer the hip resurface
Post by: Jaks111 on May 03, 2013, 03:04:23 PM
For some reason they are pushing me to have the hip replacement, I have said yes but done more research and found this amazing site only last night, I have only found so far 1 surgeon that does Resurfacing on the nhs, I am going to go back to my doctors to get another referral for thesurgeon i have found, they don't seem to be keen on ladies having the Resurfacing.

I'm 49 and live quite an active life I have given up the gym, running, I'm just playing badminton now and struggling more now than ever.
Why do they want people to have the Replacement not the resurfacing, does the replacement last longer is it easier for them to do etc.

Ps I have decided if I can I want the resurfacing
Thanks for any advice
Jacki

Welcome Jacki,

I am just a couple years older and have bilateral resurfacing 6 months apart.  I wanted resurfacing for the bone preservation more than anything.  If my device wears out, and I needed a total hip rplacement later then I would ultimately keep more bone.

From what I understand, small women( small implant) have a higher risk of failure.  Some  HR docs won't operate on women.

I hope one of your countrymen will chime in here and give you advice on how to navigate NHS.

Best wishes on getting help with your hip trouble.

Dee

Have you seen anyone at the royal orthopaedic? There are several world leading surgeons there including but not limited to Mr Treacy, Mr O'Hara and others.

Jaks,
I am 51 yr old  female and had my second hip resurfaced 8 wks ago.
The first one gave me my life back, so I did not hesitate to have the second
one done
Best decision I ever made.
Please keep searching for the best Doc and this site amazing!
Good Luck!
Patty
