Title: What is the most popular device in use at present for hip resurfacing.?
Post by: lgbran on September 09, 2013, 07:08:15 PM
Off to see the quack tomorrow . When I saw him for the initial consultation early this year he mentioned that many of the devices that had failed over the years were no longer in use and they were using the true and tried devices here in Australia. I can also recall that he said over in the States there have been over 20 devices in use over the years. Here in Australia there are about 5.
I've had a look at the devices here and elsewhere on the net and its a tad confusing. So is there a top rated device or what would people recommend or not recommend. I have complete faith in the surgeon by the way

I think if your surgeon is experienced in HR then he will pick the right one. BHR is the one with the best and longest results history.

I am pretty sure this is what he will use. I've only seen him once or the initial consultation and bombarded him with my initial questions. Thanks to this forum and other research come Thursday will be better informed . Will post what he will be using. He has done 300+ BHR with 3 revisions so am confident with him.
Thanks for responses

The other thing to ask is how much long term data he personally has. 3 failures in 300 would be good at 5 years but if that's with 1 years follow up its not so good if you see what I mean?

Also find out where and with whom he trained.

Hi
300 is not much if he has been doing them since 2006.  If he is a newer surgeon doing them on going every week, then he is becoming experienced.  In my opinion, experience means they have done 1000, 2000 or 3000 and do them on a weekly basis.

3 revisions out of 300 sounds like he is still in the learning curve.  Are those recent problems or from when he first started?  The BHR retention rate world wide is 94% at 10 years.  The top surgeons personal retention rates are in the 98 to 99% range.

He might be excellent, but there are a lot of people that had problems that said - if only I had used the very experienced surgeons since they have very few problems.

If this is the only surgeon available and you feel confident with him, then you will use him.  Hopefully his revisions are behind him at this point.  Sometimes people can't travel, but it is often worth traveling to use the very best when possible.

Good Luck.

Pat

Just back from surgeon. Has performed only 150  BHR with 3 revisions. All 3 occurred very early on in the piece (1 was a female, 1 a male over 70, and 1 chap who over excercised too soon. None have failed with an approved device, none with a male under 55 so I'm booked in for November 19.  We don't have the surgeons here in Aus who, have performed them high numbers as overseas. I cannot afford to go overseas nor do I want to. I'll keep you posted :)

Good, mine had no restrictions other than no heavy lifting (above 50 lbs) or running until 6 months, then no heavy impact sports (I do martial arts) until the one year mark.

seeing Stephen McMahon in Melbourne Australia. His PA god bless her bent over backwards and got me in to see him in October with surgery scheduled for November 11. One of the pioneers in Australia with over 1000  hip resurfaces under his belt. Not only do,I get surgery 8 days before the other surgeon. He has more then 850  more surgeries under ins belt so it's  a night win for me...100 km from home and 1.5 hours away travel will be well worth it. Can't wait
Cheers
