Had a RBHR by Dr Brooks on 2/17.
Had my first session today with my chiropractor who specializes in ART, graston and the like. (He finished 45th in the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials so he is understands my desire to be active). He also has a AlterG treadmill which I started using 4 days a week.
My first question, which I know is likely specific to Dr Brooks: What muscles were cut during surgery?
I’m thinking I had asked the question @ my pre-op visit but I simply don’t remember the answer.
I seem to be having issues with muscle spasms. Taking a muscle relaxer is helping but not eliminating them. After years of pain I am REALLY tired of hurting. I have not been consistent with walking because when I do walk-just a lap inside the house- I will start to have spasms and hurt. Also the more weight I put on my new BHR, the more spasms and pain I have, so I am only putting ~ 30% of my weight on my leg. The guideline was 75% for 6 weeks. I am taking Ibuprofen 600 mg 3x/day and using ice on and off for several hours and at night. Any thoughts or ideas?
For the spasms that I've had, this has helped me:
- Hydrate. A lack of proper hydration can promote spasms. Try pedialyte to avoid the high sugar in sports drinks.
- Avoid strenuous exercises. I laid off a couple of rehab exercises when it was clear those were bringing on spasms. I could do them later, but not then (the elliptical did this almost immediately with me).
- Apply ice until the inflammation goes down, then when it is not irritated but still tight, switch to heat.
- Elevate your legs. If you put down a pillow in front of a chair on the floor, rest your hips on that and put your legs up on the seat, this some times helped. You want to get a 90 degree stance on your hips.
Good luck, they are not fun.
