Title: Kalaupapa Trail
Post by: Boomer on March 28, 2014, 01:42:56 PM
It's almost two years since my second resurfacing and yesterday I accomplished a milestone that I had thought impossible before I discovered this website. Yesterday my wife and I hiked to and from Kalaupapa on the 3.5 mile Kalaupapa Trail. This historical trail has a 1,700 elevation gain and runs along the ocean cliffs. Tourists generally take a mule train to and from the settlement, which was strongly suggested to us at the summit. Nothing upsets a Hippy more than someone suggesting we can't do something. My wife cringed as soon as the mule suggestion was made because she knew we were going to walk the trail now.

The trail leads to the settlement established to treat Hansen's Disease more commonly known as leprosy on the Island of Molokai. We had a splendid day exploring the settlement with a US Department of the Interior guide.

I'll be 60 this August and have two Birmingham play hips installed by doctor Rector. So far, I haven't found any limitations to what I can do. And, I am just an average fellow.

Take heart Newbies and lurkers. These hips are the real deal!

Congratulations!  My son worked on a project there with the National Park Service in the late 90's.  He hiked up on that trail and I believe he told me there were around 26 switchbacks on it.  I am proud of you for that accomplishment!

Mari,

You are correct about the switchbacks. 26. It is a great hike/climb.

Thanks for the feedback.
