Title: 12 week checkup - positive results
Post by: packman on December 21, 2017, 02:34:55 PM
Had my 12 week checkup for my left hip
All restrictions removed - I can now ramp-up although I will be cautious, into lunges, squats, deadlifts, knee to chest stretching. I'm not going to run in any duration due to the stress pounding on the joint - preferring to do the stationary bike, elliptical or stair climber apparatus
Golf (albeit indoor practice but a trip coming in a few weeks), will be in the next week or so.
I kind of knew I would get a clean bill as I've been feeling great the last three weeks on the strength side of things. I did my own physio - foam roller, stationary bike, treadmill walking and listened to my body as per the advice on this forum. The difference between week 6 to week 12 is quite mercurial but I just can't grasp why people put the pressure on themselves to hurry their expectations during weeks 3-6 when you are going to have 15 years or more with the device. Turtle power!
Now for the comment on our Cdn. system - fabulous for emergencies (heart, stroke etc.),  but the minor payroll tax we pay for this free universal health care for elective surgery like this, means most people don't get to see the surgeon in your post-recovery. Perhaps I was considered low risk, but I saw both of his assistants and not Dr. Schemitsch. The wait times are absolutely incredible.
In the USA, I saw Dr. Gross several times during the post-recovery process when I stayed there, and by telephone discussion in my x-ray follow-up.
Did I absolutely need Dr. Schemitsch in post-recovery, perhaps not, but it still is a sense of reassurance
I'm happy about my end result and progress, and for the dialogue on this forum - now for a weight loss routine

Awesome Packman. The 4-month mark was when I started to integrate strength/weight training and light running (in the sand). You'll find the squats, lunges and deadlifts to really be effective in getting back your strength. You can benefit from all sorts of exercises on the various muscles that were impacted from the surgery, but the muscles that took the most abuse were the glutes. You'll find this out (or have already found out) once you start doing these exercises. IMHO, the deadlifts are probably the best for the glutes. I saw several videos of professional athletes rehabbing after hip-resurfacing (one was an NBA player Tiago Splitter). Deadlifts were a common exercise.

Just start with low weights, and listen to your body. Good luck.
