Title: Prescriptions Pre surgery
Post by: tohandley on September 17, 2018, 09:50:31 PM
Hi,

I'm a newbie to the site.  53 year old male.  I'm still pretty active; playing basketball, trail running, and obstacle course racing.  I'm scheduled to have my right hip resurfaced by Dr. Boettner in October.  I received a message from my pharmacy that my prescriptions were ready but I wasn't made aware that I was getting anything?
The prescriptions were for FABB tablets and Ferrocite.

Does anyone have any experience to let me know if this is usual or unusual?
thanks

Sorry, I've never been on these.

Did you ask the pharmacist or contacted your surgeon to explain?

I googled them. Ferrocite is iron. FaBB looks likes contains vitamin B and folic acid.

I did take iron pre op to get my iron levels up high so that I could have good levels post op and avoid the need for a transfusion. Not my favorite pill since it was so constipating.

Some people were advised to take Vit D and/or calcium if their levels tested low or bone density wasn't good. It is possible patients were told to take other vitamins pre op if they had nutritional deficiencies. I recall a blood test pre op that was designed to check for vitamin deficiencies.

Ask your doctor why he called these in. Is it routine or do you need them?

Thank you.

I have a call into the doctor.  I too looked up FABB and one thing that came up is prenatal vitamins.

I'm pretty sure that doesn't apply in my case :) !

Ha!  That's okay.  I can totally relate to not remembering what you might have taken!  ;D

Thanks for the reply!

I spoke to the doctor's office and they said it can help but in my case because I am still "young" it's not necessary.

Pre-op workup is tomorrow so I'm sure I'll get some more information.

Ok... better able to reply...  (our city was hit with a tornado  :-\ )

The reason I was put on iron was because my reserves were scarily low.  The blood department (I didn't know they had a whole section at the hospital) were trying to decide between getting injections or transfusions or iron supplement.

They decided to try the supplement route.
