Title: Practicality of Stairs After Bilateral Hip Resurfacing
Post by: Bilateral_YYC on April 13, 2023, 05:17:57 PM
Hi, I’ve been perusing these forums in advance of my bilateral hip resurfacing in July 2023.

I know that I’ll practice stairs before leaving the hospital for home but I’m hoping for some personal experiences doing stairs after a bilateral procedure.

Was it feasible to do stairs immediately upon your return home?  Did you find it increased pain or set back your recovery?

Wondering what to expect on my return home and if I’ll be restricted to one floor of my house.

I’m a 43 year old female.

Thanks in advance!  I’m finding these forums invaluable!

I can't comment on bilateral, but just had my left hip done and can comment on my experience. I kept to my first floor the first week. I could go upstairs but the risk of falling and the hassle weighed into my calculous as being not worth it. It doesn't hurt to do stairs but it is very slow and measured. If your first floor doesn't accommodate you staying on it I think you will be fine. I slept in a recliner I rented and got up to stroll around and do exercises and then back to rest, ice, elevate etc. You will come up with a routine that works for you. Just go slow and be careful on the stairs.

I have had both my hips done 11.5 years apart so I don't have direct experience of having both sides done at the same time.  With the difficulty of stairs on just my one operated side, I can't imagine trying to navigate stairs after having both done.  The ability to lift the leg and then putting weight on each of them would have been impossible for me.

Best wishes.

Thanks ScubaDuck and Danlalane for the responses.   Sounds like it’s prudent to get setup on the main floor until I’m feeling up to the stairs.  No sense is being unprepared and ending up with an unworkable situation.
