Title: insurance coverage abroad
Post by: mattlorig on June 26, 2023, 11:38:52 PM
Hey all.  I am an American planning to get a hip resurfacing in Belgium with Dr. De Smet.  I called my insurance company (Regence Uniform Medical Plan, which is part of Blue Cross Blue Shield) and asked them what kind of coverage I could expect.

The representative I spoke with said all costs about my Out of Pocket Max ($2000) would be covered at 100% "up to the allowable amount."  But, of course, the representative couldn't tell me what the "allowable amount" would be for a resurfacing.  And, even if I get an itemized bill before the operation, the rep said Blue Cross Blue Shield won't tell me what is covered until after I submit a claim.  This seems ridiculous (even illegal) to me.  But, that's just the America healthcare system industry.

Anyway, I am just wondering if those of you that have had a resurfacing abroad have had success getting your insurance coverage to pay for part of your costs and, if so, was your coverage comparable to what you would have paid had you gotten the operation in the USA?  For example, I am covered at 90% for most services in the USA up to an out of pocket max of $2000, after which 100% would be covered.  I hope my coverage will be the same in Belgium.  And, according the the rep it is.  But, I just have my doubts.  I have this sick sense that I'm going to pay for the operation and then my insurance would reimburse me for anything.

Any anecdotal experiences and tips would be very welcome.
