I had one on my left femor and there is one on my right femor. What are these things and what causes them? They don't seem to be the norm. Thanks

Big Bill here ... bone cysts are generally common in the latter stages of osteoarthritis..when it gets to be a bone on bone situation. Pat has an area about cysts on the website or you can google info about "bone cysts in the hip". I had several that were ground away during the procedure... although it is possible to wait too long and can exclude the possibility to have a resurfacing. There is a ton of info that Pat has put together...you are in the place ...do your homework and good luck!

Hi Sherry
Big Bill is correct that many of us had cysts. Here is a page all about them
http://www.surfacehippy.info/faqbonecysts.php (http://www.surfacehippy.info/faqbonecysts.php)
He is also correct in that if you wait too long, they can get so bad that you are no longer a candidate for hip resurfacing. So you need to get your x-rays to an experienced hip resurfacing surgeon and get some good input.
Good Luck.
Pat
Thank you Pat, very interesting and informative. Thank you Bill for your reply also.
Go for pre-op at hosp, joint class (most likely for total hips) and to see Dr R. I have my questions written out for him.
Going to be long day but getting closer to surgery. 17 days.
