Title: I'm a hippy, too! Dr. Scott Cook 11/26 in K.C.
Post by: PrairieGirl on December 03, 2008, 12:23:46 PM
Hey, Fellow Hippies,

I made my first post a couple of weeks ago.

I am now the proud owner of a Birmingham hip on the left. Had my surgery on Nov. 26 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center (suburban Kansas City). Dr. Scott Cook did the honors. I can't begin to express how pleased I was with both my surgeon and the hospital. My care was superb and Dr. Cook is the greatest! I, too, had a spinal block/epidural and sedation. I was leery going in. Worked like a charm!

At one week post-op I'm bearing about 85% weight on my operative leg. Walking well with one crutch. I'm about to ditch it for a cane. I'm scaling the stairs in our 104 year-old 2- story house slowly, but with ease. Haven't had a lot of pain, except for some muscle spasms in my buttocks and groin that can usually be relieved with massage. Do have some numbness in my upper leg, especially below the incision.

I simply cannot not believe how mobile I am and how the hip resurfacing has relieved my arthritis pain!

Had a couple of physical therapy sessions in the hospital and will begin more PT on Friday.

Best of luck to all of you who are currently recovering or facing an upcoming surgery,
PrairieGirl

Great to hear that you're doing so well PrairieGirl. I feel exactly the same regarding increased mobility and pain relief since the surgery. I am 7 1/2 weeks post op on my Right hip. I am amazed at how easy the whole experience has been considering that it is a very invasive surgery. I also had a spinal and sedation and would definitely recommend it.

I am scheduled to have my left hip resurfaced next Mon and am not nearly as scared as I was prior to the first time. I am already making loads of plans for skiing, snowshoeing and hiking next year.

Good luck, I hope your recovery continues to progress as it is now.

Hi Prairie Girl

I am glad you are doing well.  Many of us were very fortunately to have fast post op recoveries.  Not everyone does, but many do.  We really have to deal with what our bodies decide to do.  The surgeons skill also helps somewhat with a person's recovery - or that is my belief after reading thousands of personal stories.

I wish you the best with your recovery.  I hope you will keep us update with your progress.

Pat
