Title: I have one THR- should I get a BHR for the other hip?
Post by: RJ on August 29, 2007, 10:59:04 PM
What I'm looking for is someone who has had total hip replacement on 1 side and decided to do resurfacing on the other hip! That's the dilemma I'm in! I'm 49 and had total hip at 47 and wish I heard about resurfacing sooner! I'm looking to talk with someone who has done this! Can you help me?

PS I have talked a Doctor in San Diego and has told me I'm a perfect candidate! Now I need to make a decision?

Hi RJ

I am sorry you had trouble posting on the discussion group.

Meanwhile, I will tell you that there have been a handful of people from the Large Yahoo Surface Hippy Group that have had a THR then found out about hip resurfacing.   They went ahead and had a hip resurfacing so they could have the advantage of still having a complete femur bone in the future if they ever needed a revision again.

I will try to find some more info for you.  If you join the large group on Yahooo  http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/surfacehippy/ (http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/surfacehippy/)    You could ask the same quesiton. I am sure someone will probably answer your question.  I don't have names at hand now.

I definitely would consider having a hip resurfing if possible because you are still young at 49.  I was 61 when Ihad my hip resurfaced.

Did you get a Metal on Metal or Ceramic on Ceramic for your THR?  I hope you got a MOM since it will be about the same size as a new BHR and less likely to dislocate.  If you have one of the smaller, plastic/metal THRs you would have to be much more careful about your activities.
