Hello everyone! I am new to posting but have been reading the surface hippy site for some time . Wow what a wealth of information! Thank you Patricia. I have made an appointment with Dr. Brooks in Cleveland, Ohio and I am wondering if anyone has any information on Dr. Brooks they can share? I first saw him on the surface hippy site. I have already had an appointment with another doctor with less than 30 resurfacings and he wasn't as excited about them as when he first started doing them.  Thank you,Tony

Hi Tony

Thanks for the kind words about the website.

Dr. Brooks has a lot of happy patients.  I know he is over 300 resurfacings now.  I have met him in person and he is a very nice and very pro hip resurfacing.

I assume you live in Ohio.  I live in Marietta and use to live in Cleveland until 1981 when I moved south.

Good Luck.  I think you will like Dr. Brooks.  Be sure to keep in touch and let us know if you have any questions.  There is a great group of people on this discussion group.

Patricia, thank you for your reply. I actually live in Indiana. There seems to be a shortage of experienced resurfacers here. The one I saw was in Mooresville and trained under Mr. Treacy. So it was very disappointing when he wasn't as excited about resurfacing anymore. I was also surprised that he had done so few. Hopefully there are some Dr. Brooks patients out there who will share their experiences with me. Thanks again!

Hello All,

I have posted 1 other time, but I am really on point with this.  The quick is I am a 41 yr  old Male, I need a RBHR, I think.  My Injury was in Iraq 2003. The fracture was called a 'pulled grion' by Air Force medical folks.  My hip really degraded very fast from lack of knowledge, improper healing and I continued to try to do the things I did.

My VA doctors are only wanting to THR  but....claiming they do re-surfacing..... but whot tell me how many they have done and with who or where they trained.

I am in Oklahoma, with zero doctors listed.  the closest guys are in Ft. Worth and have over 600 combined.

VA in other parts of the US do out-source this to the correct specialists.

I am sending my x-rays to be reviewed by Dr. Mont  and Dr. Clarke who both have completed cases on vets referred by the VA.

HOW do I get the local guys to embrace that there may be another oiption for me?

He claims I am not a candidate, but gives no real reason.

Please, any thoughts anyone?

JayClark,

Glad your stateside again!  Thank you and best of luck!  Four weeks ago I was in the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC at  the same time as a 37 - 39 y.o. male named Mark.  Mark was from Montana and had bi lat resurfacing performed by Dr. Su, the day after I had the same surgery.  I do not know if this helps you but Mark  told me that the VA was paying for his surgery.  You may want to contact Dr. Su in NYC  since apparently he was able to get the bi lat resurfacing approved by the VA for Mark. He's a gifted surgeon as well and I 'm sure would be happy to look at your xrays to assess your candidacy for resurfacing.

I know that Vicky Marlow knows Mark b/c he told me that he had spoken to her re: surgeons when I asked him how he selected Dr. Su.  You may want to contact Vicky Marlow via this web site to see if she can get you in touch with Mark.  Mark may be a good source of advice for you.  Vicky also may be a great source of information.

Hey Jay,
First off thanks for your service, my family and I will forever be greatful for what you all are doing for us.I met with several doctors one told me I was not a canidate for resurfacing because he said I had bad bone quality.Turns out my bone quality was and is good and I had a very succesful surgery outcome thus far with a doctor who knew what he was doing.Do not take no for an answer, find a doctor who is very pro hip resurfacing and find a way for the VA to approve this surgery.Fight hard if you have to and do'nt give up til you get what you want.Good luck.

Tony,

I had a hip resurfacing done by Dr. Brooks on August 13, 2008.  I have had no problems and everything is progressing very well.

I like Dr. Brooks and his assistant, Phil.  He is a very confident Dr. and definitely sold on BHR.  He is conservative on rehab, 6 weeks on 2 crutches with no more than 70% weight on leg and no running, jumping or high impact on leg for 1 year.  I am now over 6 months and have no pain in my hip.  Still building up the leg muscles while being careful not to "over due it".

It took a while to get in to see him.  It took me 4 months to get in to see him and another 3 months before he could do the surgery.  Cleveland Clinic was very efficient although the PT dept. was new to BHR.  They kept treating me like a THR.  My pre-op (x-ray, blood work, ect...) was done like an assembly line.  I went from one area to another with not more than a 5 minute wait.  What I thought would take most of the day took only 2-1/2 hours.

Let me know if you have any questions.
