Can I ask for BHR on the NHS?
« on: March 04, 2010, 11:43:50 AM »
Hello all... great website...
I have finally been referred to a specialist at a hospital that I'm sure doesn't do BHR, but does THR.
I have had pain in the left hip due to Osteo Arthritis for three years.... the last year with pain every day. I've started using a stick but this has only really helped the severe kneck pain I have been getting as a result (i assume) of walking with a strange gait.
The Naproxen/paracetamol prescribed have no effect.... only the paracodol or codiene which I try to avoid.
I have also had spondilolysthesis since I was 16 years old but after some 2 years of Chiropractic treatment has been ok on the whole... (until recently!)
My first appointment in the THR clinic is in three weeks.
My question is......Can I specify that I want BHR due to my young age (43) and active lifestyle.
 I hope so because I really don't want a THR.......yet!

Thanks in advance to any of you NHS customers.

 Keith

Hello.  Let me advise that you should be asking about resurfacing rather than asking for a specific product.  Your surgeon can discuss the pros / cons of the procedure, as well as the product that he / she uses.  As you said, this site provids a great deal of infromation for your surgeon / patient conferences.  I was in the same situation with my first surgeon as he did not believe in resurfacing.  The second, who is doing my resurfacing procedure this May... does.   Good luck...

Hi

I am in the US, so I don't know that much about your medical system.  I do know that a lot of patients in the UK have received hip resurfacing.  You are very young and I think you need to start asking questions about how to get a hip resurfacing. Are you able to contact other surgeons like Mr. McMinn or Mr. Traecy?  Maybe you could call Mr. Traecy's office and ask how to get refered to a hip resurfacing surgeon.

I wish I could help you more, but I don't know about your system.  I know in Canada that people can choose to go to another surgeon - but I assume they have to pay.

Maybe someone from the UK will answer your question.

Hi Keith

I've had a BHR on the NHS in England.     The surgeon I was referred to was the same one who did my first BHR as a private patient.  (BHR wasn't available in my area of the NHS in 2004).

I think you have some choice of surgeon and hospital so my advice would be to ask around.  Your own doctor would be the first person to ask.  Let them know exactly what you want and see if they can help.  You could also try the NHS Direct website and helpline for more information.

As has been said on here before, there is a window of opportunity for having resurfacing.  If the damage to your hip is too great/too advanced then resurfacing may not be possible.  With that in mind, time may be important.

Very best wishes to you.

Thankyou for your replies, I've recently had a very informative e-mail and I'm determined to continue leading a very (more) active life again, walking and paragliding being my biggest loves so I'll stay focussed and not let 'them' decide for me.
I realise I'm going to have to fight for this one, there's not many people about who can do this procedure and although it's still partly experimental it looks far more promising than THR. Just wish thay'd have hurried up with th cartillage growing technique they're developing now!!  But I can't wait that long.

Hi Keith

I wish you good luck in getting your hip resurfacing.

I have one comment to your reply about resurfacing being experimental.  It is no longer considered experimental.  The first resurfacings with the BHR started in 1997.  Dr. De Smet of Belgium started back then and McMinn before that time. Dr. De Smet has done over 3000 resurfacings now.  Check out the surgeons in the UK and their experinece   http://www.surfacehippy.info/listofdoctors.php#UK   McMinn has done about 3000 and Traecy about 4000.  The UK has the most expeirnced resurfacing surgeons in the world.  McMinn developed the BHR.  3 hip resurfacing devices are FDA approved in the US and it is no longer experimental.  Several of the insurance companies even have statements to that.   So don't think you are going to be an experiment.  You are not.  Hip Resurfacing records and medical studies go back more than 10 years now.

I just wanted to put your mind at ease and have you think of resurfacing as a standard procedure in the UK and much of the world.

Please stand strong, ask questions and tell the people you are working with that you want a resurfacing.

Mr Mcminn did my BHR last Oct. (I'm 46) but went privately, most GP's (I'm a receptionist in a GP surgery) don't know what resurfacing is, if you can get it done via the NHS route, great, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting !!! good luck

i had mine done on the nhs in october 08.
12 weeks between seeing the consultant and him asking me which type of hip op i preferred and the actual op.the government had said it they could cut the waiting list to 18 weeks and they were right.
my device is a birmingham mid-head and was done at wrightington hospital in lancashire.
if i could have afforded it i would probably have got mr mcminn but everything has gone well anyway.

Hi
You can get HR on NHS and it is now your right to choose where you have it done in England (wait time is 18 weeks max. Ask your GP about choose and book for your procedure) . I think that resurfacing is now more common in the UK, although some surgeons may have only carried out a few hundred HR's, although they have probably been trained by a surgeon that has done many more.  Where are you located?.

Yes at the new Derby Royal Hosp. The consultant had done a few hundred HR's last November when I had mine done.  I was in on Tues and out Thurs.  I think if I had found this site before I might have tried to get McMinn, but saying that I have no problems with My HR.  Ive got my 6 month xray / check up in a couple of months so fingers crossed all will be well.
