I noticed that a NYC surgoen, Dr. Boettner is NOT listed on your site anymore and was wondering why he was removed from only one week ago?

Hi

I have only wanted to list doctors that are experienced.  So I decided to use 50 hip resurfacings as a benchmark.  I really want to use 100, but there are so many newer doctors that I settled on 50 now.  At some time in the future, I will switch to 100 as a benchmark.

I settled on that amount of experienced from reading all the medical studies about the steep learning curve, reading many stories about people having problems after surgery with the newer doctors and using my personal doctor's recommendation ( De Smet who has done over 3000) who says a person should choose a doctor that has done at least 100 hip resurfacings.

If a doctor has not done 50 hip resurfacings, I am no longer listing them.  I also removed any doctors that I did not have stats for.  There are a couple exceptions because the doctors have written articles and provided videos to me.  But there are only a couple exceptions.

Doctors often write to me and if they are not experienced in hip resurfacing, I don't list them.  I wait until they become more experienced.  Patients also write to me and give me information about doctors and I do use that too.

I am trying to keep the list as a honest and useful list of experienced hip resurfacing surgeons.  I know many people love their newer doctors and as the become more experineced I will list them.

I know of doctors that have had a femur neck fractures after doing more than 100 and some that have done several hundreds that have had many problems.  So I try to watch who I put on the list.  It doesn't mean the doctor is not good, I just prefer listing experienced surgeons that I know are not having problems.  All the really experienced doctors went thru the same learning stage too and they had a few femur neck fractures and some loose acetabulum cups, etc along the way.  So it is not unusual to have some problems early in the learning curve. Therefore, the best way not to be one of the failure statistics as a patient is to use a doctor with a lot of experience.

Every doctor has to get experience and will have lots of patients whether I list them or not - the website is not that powerful yet!

If you know of experienced surgeons, send me a note.  I will write to them to get all their statistics if they are willing to share them.

Pat,

I have a appointment to consult with Dr. Mont this week.  However, I when I called Dr. Su's office the first appointment I could get was in Sept, which means that surgery wouldn't be until Nov. or Dec.  Assuming the meeting with Dr. Mont goes well is it worth waiting to meet with Dr. Su?  Is there any way you are aware of to get an appointment with Dr. Su any sooner?

Call and tell them you want to be slotted in for any cancellations.  I highly recommend Dr. Su, also his hospital has the lowest infection rate of any US hospital, that says a lot to me too with the current epidemic of infections in so many hospitals.  Or tell them that you want a tentative surgery date now along with your appointment with Dr. Su?

Hi

You have to feel comfortable with your decision to have surgery with your doctor.  If you feel you need to talk with several surgeons, do so.  If you meet Dr. Mont and are convinced - go with it.

Dr. Mont normally uses the Wright C+ with the anterior approach and has done over 1600 resurfacings.

Dr. Su uses the BHR with the posterior approach and has done over 700 resurfacings.

It really has to be your decision and what you feel good about.

Both doctors are excellent.  You could see if Dr. Su has any cancellations as Vicky said.  I think if you need more input, just be honest with Dr. Mont.  I am sure he will understand.

Hi Pat,

Update information in case you didn't know, Dr. Su has moved his his office to the Hip Center at HSS. Same phone number. Also I'm pretty sure he's done more than 1300 surgeries though I don't know what his number is now.
