It does work well if done properly, we had a Lifeboat shout to a Dredger that had sucked up a second world war practice shell. We took the navy bomb squad out to it and they lowered it to the sea bed and lit the magnesium fuse. It must have gone off just as a shoal of spratts where swimming by hundreds of them came to the surface, the seaguls and Seals had a lovely time cleaning them up.
