Finding a Surgeon in the Boston area
« on: February 24, 2013, 06:04:32 PM »
Hi:

I have scheduled an appointment for a hip resurfacing consult with Dr. Carl Talmo at the New England Bapatist Hospital.

I haven't been able to find out very much about his experience or his outcomes.
Can anyone help me out with with information about Dr. Talmo.

Kevin

Hi Kevin

I don’t know about Dr. Marchand’s numbers and do not know of Dr. Talmo.

The only advice I would give you is that there are 3 really, really experienced hip resurfacing surgeons in NY.  Dr. Su at 3000, Dr. Clarke and Dr. Marwin over 1000.

I always suggest you use the most experienced surgeons you can for hip resurfacing.  Of course, it is up to you.  You want to make sure you will get a resurfacing.  Ask the chance of getting one over a THR.  Some surgeons will do a bait and switch from resurfacing to THR during surgery.  I don’t know if Talmo or Marchand would do that, but I know of others that have done that.

I am going to post the contact info for the NY doctors.  I am sorry I don’t know more about the two you are considering.  Be sure to ask your surgeon how many hip resurfacing they have done and how many they do now. You want a surgeon that does them all the time, not just a few now and then.  The national registries and stats show a surgeon that does a lot frequently has a better retention rate.

Hi Kevin,

I will try not to sound too negative about the doctor you are meeting, but I met with him just over a year ago (in January) for my first surgical consultation regarding my hip. He was very anti hip-resurfacing. He told me that he only does a hip resurfacing when someone's femur is so bent (from an accident or some other issue, I guess) that he can't jam the stem of a THR down it.

I could bring up some other negatives about my meeting with him but will refrain. My "consult" with him was the single worst interaction I have ever had with a medical professional in a lifetime of many such appointments. I walked out of there disillusioned and confused. That soon turned to anger.

But the appointment turned out to be incredibly helpful to me. I realized that if I wanted an HR done then I needed to go to one of the best in the world, even if I had to leave vaunted Boston for it. So I flew to South Carolina and had the amazing Dr. Gross operate on me.

So I have the doctor you mentioned to thank for (unintentionally) giving me the shove I needed to do what I in my heart wanted to: travel to see one of the best in the world.

Good luck with your appointment. But know that (unless he has changed his position, which I tend to doubt) he will actively try to talk you out of an HR.

If you are genuinely interested in a resurf versus a replacement, I would strongly encourage you to look outside of the New England area.  I live in Boston, work in the health care industry, and had my hip done by McMinn.  As Pat mentioned, there are some great folks in New York with proven track records.

PM me if you like and happy to provide more info.
