I had BiLat hip resurfacing performed in '09 by Dr. Su at HHS.  It was a positive experience and altho I went very heavy on the rehab, i.e. 4 hrs. per day beginning 5 days post surgery the rehab was not difficult.  I have been lifting weights for more than 40 years.  I have been developing osteo arthritis in both shoulders for at least 5 years.  It has gotten to the point where the inflammation is significant, especially post exercise, and the instability in the should when I do overhead or prone pressing motions is such that the rotator cuff pain in the rear deltoid area is painful and interferes with my lifts when weights get heavier.  I also have a pretty restricted range of motion, due largely to osteophytes on the ball of the shoulder/  I am beginning PT to work of range of motion.  I don't know how much I can improve at this time.  I received cortisone shots in both shoulders for the first time today and hope it is helpful but the orthopedic doctor I went to at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia says that surgery is very likely in the future.  If I am going to have surgery I want to return to a normal, active life, including lifting post surgery.  Does anyone know if there are procedures such as shoulder resurfacing, cartilage grafts, etc... that are effective and would enable me to remain active and lift? >:(

I noticed that a company in the UK makes a VAIOS shoulder system that recently was used in surgery in Norway.

Try looking on their website: www.jri-ltd.co.uk.

A hippy on here, Anna, will shortly have a brilliant THR fitted made by the same company.

I've done a small amount of research on shoulder and yes you can have it resurfaced. However they do not have the longevity of a resurfaced hip. It seems to me that once you start going down that road any sort of training etc is really not going to happen.

Shoulder resurfacing is an option, but Dr. Warren at the HSS prefers shoulder replacement if both sides of the shoulder joint need to be resurfaced.  Apparently correct placement of the resurfacing component on the glenoid side of the joint is difficult to achieve.

I have developing osteoarthritis at the right shoulder but I can still do all activities.  I limit racquetball to 2-3 times a week and strengthen the shoulder muscles with weight training.

there is a doctor in Wichita, KS who does shoulder resurfacing.  His name is Dr. Bernard F Hearon.  You may want to contact him to find out more information.

Hi

Dr. Bose of India is one of the best hip resurfacing surgeons in the world, especially for athletes.  He also does shoulder resurfacing.  He has a section on his website about it.  He also asked me to post some info.

Here is a page I put together which has the info from Dr. Bose and others
