Pen y Fan conquered
« on: July 04, 2014, 07:57:40 AM »
Just thought I'd do a little post. On Wednesday myself, the wife and the dog managed to climb pen y fan in Wales. This is a beast of a climb it measures 886M. This is the hill that forms an integral part to the world renowned SAS selection process called the fan dance. We managed the hard route also ;)

All righty, looks fun. I'd like to see more photos here. BTW, how did you post the photo? I recall having difficulty posting a quality image in this forum.

The photo was actually very easy! I do pretty much everything on my iphone now! All I did was up load the photo to the photobucket app and then copied and pasted the link! :) even a total IT dumbo like me can manage it!  :)

Ok then! I guess my problem was I tried using the "insert image" function, or something like that.

Glad I can help others in any way deb!  :) I plan on doing some other pretty hard stuff before I have my right hip done probably next year. I want to be in the best shape possible for that as I'd like to recover faster than I did initially from my left

That's a great picture. Thanks, Danny. Are you going to get the right hip resurfaced so soon?

My left hip was dx February 2011; my right showed noticeable symptoms during my first physiotherapy for my left which was around November 2011. Similar boat, I guess.

How was your left doing and feeling on a hike like that?

I can honestly say my left hip feels like it did prior to the arthritis 99% of the time! There's the odd thing I will do usually associated with a judo throw where I struggle but I just adapt stuff to me now! :)

When I saw Mr Treacy's registrar in May she examined me and was quite shocked about how bad my rom is on my right hip. I explained that the steroid injection had worked fantasticly for about a week and then gone back to normal. She pretty much started booking me in for round 2 there and then!!! I said I've had enough surgery to last me a life time and that I'd like to re assess in November when I see. Mr T for my 3 year check. I do now struggle to put socks on and tie my laces but the pain killers are doing such a wonderful job that I'm in no pain. I think I'll try and see if he'll agree to do me in the summer next year. :)

To be honest, the condition of your right hip doesn't sound too bad. Guess with all you've read, and the experience on the left, has given you a lot of confidence the BHR will last many decades to come. So why not get it resurfaced now?

Myself, I'm more conservative in the sense that I would rather wait until it is so damaged or painful I have no choice. That way, the chance of having a revision to THR -- and a subsequent Revision THR -- are as low as possible.

One thing, Revision THR's don't last long even if they are babied. Hope that changes.

The main reason is time off work. I've just had a shoulder reconstruction and the football season is about to start again(I work for a championship football club). If I were to go off again my employment would likely be at risk so I'll wait till next year and go from there. Also I need to save up to have the time off work. Your right realistically I could push on for several years I suspect but due to being young and working in a at time VERY physical role I can't afford to get to the point where I can't walk again as again there would be no way I could perform my job role. I walk with a limp now and like I say struggle getting my shoes and socks on. The registrar measured my flexion at less than 70 degrees and I think my internal rotation was something like 5 degrees!

Just wondered which painkillers you take to keep you out of pain?

Yup, guess it's also how practical things like money and work affect the best decision!

Regarding painkillers, the McMinn Centre website recommends that anti-inflammatories be avoided to the maximum extent possible because it causes bone damage that can affect the BHR fixation. Codein is one of the recommended alternatives. Of course, Codein can be pretty addictive and make you drowsy. Nothing's perfect, I guess.

One thing that works brilliantly for me is Turmeric (curcimin complex). I take 1 or 2 875mg pills a day and it takes the edge off very well. I read that up to 4000mg can be taken a day safely. It's actually a health product, not a medication, and some people use it as a supplement for overall health. It's from East Indian medicine and has been used for thousands of years. It's what makes currie orange. You can find it anywhere. Also only $20 for 1-2 months supply. I wish more people would try Turmeric.
