Info on Dr. Richard Iorio in NYC?
« on: July 18, 2014, 10:38:17 PM »
Hi Everyone:

I'm new to the board, and I'm just beginning my journey to better hip health. I know there are several really excellent doctors in NYC, but the top two guys (Dr.s Su and Boettner, apparently) aren't in my insurance network. I have an appointment with a Dr. Richard Iorio at NYU/Langone, who reportedly does resurfacing as well as THR and arthroscopic procedures. There is a Dr. Marwin at the same place as well who does HR.

Has anyone heard of this Dr. Iorio or had any experience with him?

I am aware of the importance of having a Dr. with a track record of 1000+ HRs, and that is one of the first questions I will ask him. I think I"m a strong candidate for this procedure but I'm keeping an open mind while I do my research.

Thank you in advance for any information you may have!

Just one thing to keep in mind... Dr Su  may not be in your plan, but the hospital might.  In that case, you would only be paying 'extra' on his fees.  This may *only* be a  few thousand $.  That's not chump change, but it may be money well spent.

Good luck in your search!

Dr. Iorio is not one the the surgeons that I know has done a thousand or two of hip rsurfacing surgeries.  Dr. Clarke, Marwin and Su all have.  I always encourage people to use the top surgeons since they do have the most consistent, best outcomes.

Here is the list from NY   http://www.surfacehippy.info/listofdoctors.php#New_York

If you do decide on a less experienced surgeon, please let us know about your experience.  Ask him how many hip resurfacings he does on a weekly and daily basis.  If he doesn't do them all the time, he is not a hip resurfacinhg specialists.  It is best to stick with those that specialize in hip resurfacing - if possible.

Good Luck.

Thank you both for the replies!

It is good to know at least Dr. Marwin is in the 1000+ club, as he is on staff at NYU, and I will have no problem asking for an appointment for a consultation with him as well while I'm there.

That is a good point, too, about finding out if the hospital Dr. Su is at takes my insurance even if he personally does not. I agree it would be money well-spent to put out the extra funds for a top guy in this case.

Not a situation in which to cut corners..... Thanks again!
