Do you know of a good hip resurfacing PT in your area?
« on: January 02, 2009, 08:50:33 AM »
People both on Hip Talk and the Yahoo Surfacehippy Discussion Group are always looking for PT facilities that are familiar with hip resurfacing.

I don't know of any personally.  If you consider that only a small fraction of orthopedic surgeons in the US actually perform hip resurfacing, then it makes sense that there would be even fewer PTs that know about it.

If you have actually used a PT that knew about hip resurfacing and helped you with your post op recovery, share your find with the rest of the world.

My personal experience when I decided I wanted to try PT when I got home was they knew nothing about hip resurfacing and only kept me 2 sessions since I was so far ahead of the normal THR patient.  They did not know what to do with me.  They were extremely impressed with my quick recovery.

If you have found a good PT, tell us about him or her.

For folks in the Washington, DC area, especially Northern Virginia, I would highly recommend the therapists at the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic in Arlington and Alexandria.  While not the most convenient locations for me, I used AOC because my surgeon, Dr. Andy Engh, is a partner with AOC and I felt that their PT's would best understand my needs as a BHR patient.  This proved a wise decision, as my non-operative hip, which was the better of the two, but still in need of surgery, deteriorated rapidly while I was re-habbing my operative hip, to the point that it was interfering with my rehabilitation.  My therapist had a "direct line" to Dr. Engh and we were able to move aggressively and schedule the second surgery for a date 3-1/2 months after the first (typically, Dr. Engh likes to wait 6 months before doing the second hip).

My experience is that a good therapist can play a significant and important role in a BHR patient's recovery.

In the MPLS, MN area I recommend Merz Physical Therapy in Minnetonka, MN.  Specifically Shawn Marquis who was my main
PT and Doug Merz.

They were recommended by my surgeon, Dr. Nelson and they helped me a lot with my recovery from Bi-Lateral hip resurfacing.  I found the therapy pool work very helpful despite the chip I had on my shoulder about its effectiveness.

My "unusual gait" was corrected and I found the whole PT experience to be quite pleasant compared to others I have gone through.

Their web site is:  http://merzpt.com/

If you are on Long Island, I highly recommend Active Motion Physical Therapy in Oyster Bay.  They are amazing and the facility is beautiful.  They really care and are so knowledgable about hip resurfacing.  I make huge strides every time I go!

In NYC, I am extremely happy with Stash Rutkowski at Sports Therapy And Rehabilitation.  Stash and his colleague April,
got me moving in no time and at 8 or 9 weeks post op, I was getting shoes and socks on unasssisted.  They both have experience with resurfacing patients, and made me look forward to PT.  At 11 weeks now, I still try to get in once a week for the manual stretching he does of my hips.  Better ROM now than in the last 3-4 years.  Highly recommend.

Would love to know of PTs who are familiar with hip resurfacing in Washington DC or Chevy Chase Md.  I have some people I like but I am not sure they know much about resurfacing in particular.  Virginia is not easy for me to get to.  Thanks.  BTW, I am almost four weeks since my surgery.  Walking well with a cane (walked about 15 minutes yesterday outside which is the longest walk I have taken so far.  Doing PT exercises twice a day (from the home PT person). Some pain mostly around glute muscles.  I think they have just been unused for so long.  Today's big issue:  Exhaustion.  Hits me every so often like a ton of bricks.  Luckily website tells me this is totally normal.

I live in upstate NY (about 2 hours straight north of the city).  The home PT that they sent me right after I got home from the hospital was like the one Pat had - she didn't know what hip resurfacing was (although did research it & was more knowledgeable by her 2nd visit) and after 2 visits didn't know what more to do with me (I was already walking quite well with 2 crutches + doing the exercises from the hospital PT 3 times/day so ... there was nothing more she could add at that time).

By contrast the out patient PT place I'm going to - Kingston Physical Therapy - is extremely familiar with resurfacing.  As a matter of fact the therapist I'm seeing (who happens to be the owner of the place) was just at a seminar at HSS (Hospital Special Surgery) where Dr. Su (my surgeon) was a speaker.  We formed an instant bond as her husband had also had THR at HSS & was familiar with the guest facilities that my husband used while I was in the hospital.  I had my first evaluation with her last week ... my first 'real' session today ... focus will be on stretching & getting my walking gait/stride back to normal.

And now for my question:  I'm spending most of October/November on the Big Island of Hawaii .. need to find a PT place there to finish up my work .. anyone know of a good PT place there??

Patients in suburbs south of Denver should try Jeff at Colorado Athletic Conditioning Clinc. He's in their office off of Lincoln, right by I-25 (near Lone Tree, although mailing address is Parker), one of 5 CACC locations. He's familiar with resurfacing, having worked with several patients from Dr. Rector, my surgeon. Nice guy, knows his stuff, pushes but only what you can take. I don't know if other CACC therapists are as familiar with resurfacing; I had a couple work with me while Jeff was out for wedding/honeymoon, and they were not.

Meant to do this, but: In Boston's western suburbs, Bay State Physical Therapy. It's got several locations, but I used the Franklin, MA location. I can highly recommend them.

In the near western burbs of Chicago Stacey Knowles at West Suburban PT was great!  There were days I whined about how much she kicked my butt.  She would not release me until I was able to walk without a limp and each visit was different, the only consistent was the 5 minutes warm up on the recumbent bike.   Next spring I will be seeing her again for the right hip.

I probably should have done this sooner, but I want to talk up my PT in Eugene, Oregon.  He is Mark Oullette at Reclaim PT and he and his staff are excellent.  He worked with Dr Phillipon (very experienced arthroscopic FAI surgeon) and Mark sort of specializes in hips and recovery from THR and HR.  He works with many of the U of Oregon athletes and he's more of an ortho specialist than a PT, but he know's both areas well.  I know Eugene is small compared to many of the places others on this forum are from, but if anyone is in the area and needs PT, I recommend him.

I highly highly recommend Kessler Physical Therapy in East Brunswick, NJ.  They are very knowledgeable about resurfacing and tailored a very aggressive aqua - and land therapy program for me.  If you're in Central NJ - you should check them out. (by the way - there are two Kessler PT's in East Brunswick - this one is located in a NY Sports Club facility and they get to use their pool and gym equipment.

East Brunswick isn't too far from me, about an hour, but hoping to find one near Flemington, NJ (Hunterdon County)?

I'm just finishing up my last day of out patient PT with Florida Medical Physical Therapy Division, in Zephyrhills, Florida (near Tampa). They have been GREAT. My guy Ken, has been extremely helpful. He's always explained what's going on with my muscles & why we're doing the exercises he has me doing. I've made great progress & felt that everyone there was polite & professional.

I highly recommend them.

Just got done with a bhr by dr Pritchett.  I know someone had posted this question here before with no answers. Surprising given I've seen at least a few blogs with surgery by dr Pritchett.  Anyways I want to ensure I get great PT so would appreciate recommendations. I live on the Eastside. I'm thinking about Erik Moen with corposano pt since he is one of the best cycling pt's around and also is on the list. He did my bike fit and it was the last one I needed.  I'm thinking it would also be a great way to target getting back on the bike.
