One week on from surgery and so glad to be here. (Did have second thoughts waiting to go down to theatre but knew I wouldn’t be able to face family, friends and fellow hippys). Was able to have a resurfacing- I have male hips apparently which gave Doc more hip bone to work with. First few days in hospital were a bit ropey, my blood pressure was very low so I kept passing out which hampered progress a bit. Also didn’t think I’d ever be able to move my lead balloon leg unaided. But the incentive to get home let me make enough progress to be able to come home by Sunday evening. Then had a bit of a panic attack after I came home. Wound has been weeping a bit but nurse has checked daily and today I had the last of my staples out. Relief. Still feeling a bit dippy and tired and leg is quite sore and swollen but mobility is far better, just have to keep concentrating when using the crutches and getting around, sitting and in and out of bed.

Just got to be patient I think and accept that each day is not going to be better than the last and just focus on the long term gains. If I get one good night I’m disappointed that the next night isn’t the same, have forgotten all the broken sleep I had post op because of the pain. The swelling in the leg is amazing, if I hadn’t seen a few people on the ward when I was in hospital with similar swelling I’d have been really worried. Also the bruising is still coming out 10 days on! Ah well. Also found that my heel was getting a little sore but that using a ‘flight pillow’ underneath my heel in bed has helped.
Wound is still running v slightly in one place but nurse is pleased and yes I am glad to have the staples out. Roll on Tuesday Sal.
Moving about is getting easier, its amazing how versatile a pair of crutches can be. I’ve been told that I need to use them for 6 weeks post op to keep the weight off the hip so will be able to do cartwheels by then I reckon.

I am making progress. Some days/nights better than others but I can definitely feel my mobility getting easier. Leg still hard and painful but guess its only to be expected. Went to the GP earlier in the week and he checked out my scar, I felt it was quite ‘puckered’ but he was ok saying that it was the underlying stitching that was causing this. (not part of a staple that had been left in, as my paranoid brain was telling me). Am going to try the bio-oil as it seems that this gets good results.
Three week anniversary passed in a bit of a blur as it was my birthday, so have been spoilt. Need to get back to normality this week and concentrate on exercises, diet etc. I see you’ve got a pool near to you, have you been yet? What sort of exercise will you be doing? I’m going to be going for some rehab therapy later this month through work, so trying to build up my strength in readiness for that.

I am making gains, though some days better than others, had bad lower back pain for the first time yesterday but cleared with some meds and heat pack. I’m getting a bit frustrated with my gait too, I think I limped for so long before the op that there is some muscle memory there! Going on one crutch ok but find that I ache if I do this for too long. Was expecting to be able to do some tidy steps without crutches, there is no pain as such but then why the limp!
Have found that concentrating on my posture does help, head up straight back, no slouching. Just need to do more exercise I think. Few nice walks in the sunshine today, hope the weather is good for you too. Also can’t wait to have a nice long bath.

I’ve been spending a lot of time in the water over the last few weeks and found that hydrotherapy has really helped with mobility and ease of doing my exercises.
I’m over 8 weeks post op now and have been having rehab therapy at a charity centre linked to my work. I’ve been very lucky to have access to hydrotherapy, exercise programme and daily walks. I can really see the improvement, just need to keep it up now that I am back home.
Really annoyed that I am still limping when I walk with no crutch. And still very stiff when I get up from sitting for any period of time. Most worrying though is that my other hip is now aching, I hope its because it has been worked hard and not because it has been biding its time and has now decided to speak out
I saw my Doctor last week and he told me that the stiffness after sitting was ‘start up’ where your body takes a bit of time to get used to the fact that it has a lump of metal in the hip.

No more cane which my consultant appproved but, at 12 weeks out, getting up from sitting or stationery is not pretty. Apparenty its called ‘start up’! After walking for a while I a fine an elicit compliments etc but when I first get up up it is still not good though not painful.
