an Acetabular Inclination Angle < 50ºThomas P. Gross, MD

Midlands Orthopaedics, P.A. Columbia, SC.6/5/2012INTRODUCTION
A steep acetabular inclination angle is the primary cause of adverse wear related failure with well-designed metal-on-metal bearing hip resurfacing arthroplasties (HRA). One recent study demonstrated that positioning acetabular components of stemmed total hip arthroplasties (THA) within the “Lewinnek safe zone” is difficult; only 62% had AIA |

Biomet Dr. Gross January 2006 |
With all the news lately about the metal on metal being bad, etc I though I would check in again. I am now 6 years, 2 months post op. Still the best decision I ever made and pain free unless I overdo the soft tissue. I have Biomet Magnum 60mm acetabular component and the Biomet Recap 54mm cemented femoral component. I just had the metal ion test done last month |

Metal-on-metal hip resurfacing with hybrid fixation has been introduced as an alternative to standard total hip arthroplasty, especially for young and active patients. There are few studies in the literature on the midterm results of cementless femoral side resurfacing. The purpose of this study was to present our seven-year clinical results of … Read the rest

FDA wants surveillance net for orthopedic devices

The Food and Drug Administration has proposed a program that would query public and private databases to help study the efficacy of orthopedic implants. FDA will issue a request for quotations next month in an effort to identify companies that could evaluate orthopedic implant registries for participation in the program. The program is part of the broader Sentinel Initiative FDA launched earlier this year. The broader |

Emaxwell Bilateral Dr. Gross 2009
I am just over 2 weeks post op from second half of Bilateral. The first week was definitely a challenge. I took the pain pills before I felt I needed them and that worked great, not much pain to deal with. I was a little unprepared for how useless my legs would be, a good deal of swelling even with the ice machine. I guess the big downside from Bilateral is not having a good |
Evan’s hip resurfacing RBHR with Dr. Su 2009
Dr. Su and the Hospital for Special Surgery
I had a right hip resurfacing on 3/5/09 performed by Dr. Edwin Su at the
Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). It is now 3/23 – I am feeling great and
walking comfortably with the use of a cane. The lead up to surgery was two
years of limping and pain. The decision to have surgery was an easy one.
After doing my research – much of which … Read the rest

I am on the other side! Flew home (Phoenix) from South Carolina yesterday. I had my resurfacing on Wed, Dec 3. The airport travel on Sat, Dec 6 was do-able, but took a lot out of me. I m having more pain today than I had hoped. I read a lot of your stories about not having any post op pain and I am … Read the rest
Liz’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Gross 2012
January 17, 2012
Right now I feel a little bit of soreness near the incision, but they just turned on the ice unit, so I’m feeling relief already. When I say soreness, it’s very minor — maybe 2 out of 10.
The very nice nurse told me they usually remove the catheter at 6:am (it’s 7 now) but my blood pressure is low (88/50) so they are giving me fast IV push for 2 hours. … Read the rest
Ioannis Hip Resurfacing Dr. De Smet 2006
Fri Feb 23, 2007
Hi there,
I am Ioannis from Greece and in August I will be 14 years old. I had left hip AVN since early 2005, diagnosed after five months and for one year and a half I used crutches. I was told by the doctors here that I have to wait until my bones will be mature enough in order to do something about the collapsed hip of mine. Then I wished … Read the rest

December 23rd (Post Op Day 4)
In morning, breakfast then an hour of land PT with Marc at 9:30 am – ½ hour per leg. He has me lay on back in bed. He starts with a several minute light rubdown of thigh – not deep tissue or muscle, but designed to increase blood flow, using talcum powder. Next ankle flexes, then quad compressions – press back of knee into bed, hold for 5 seconds … Read the rest
Jan’s Hip Resurfacing Dr. De Smet 2006
January 31, 2006 – how very strange this universe works…
I am recently back from Belgium with a brand new right hip (De Smet, Jan.11/06). So far, life “on the other side” (as Alan called it once!) has been great. Slow and steady, but already feeling so much better than I was before I went to Ghent.
I have been reading the posts since I have been back with great interest. For the little age … Read the rest
