Based upon some recent reading, I am under the impression that the BHR componets manufactured by Smith & Nephew do not offer an interchangable THR component in the event a revision is needed due to femoral head fracture or collapse.  This means (well the literature says "recommended") that the Birmingham acetabular cup must also be removed and replaced in the event of a revision.  If the cup has been seated properly and shows no sign of wear, and if the bone has graphed well to the back side of the cup, isn't this some trama that could be avoided if there was a "Birmingham" THR compoent designed to fit the cup we now have?

Does anyone know if Smith & Nephew is working on a THR femoral side component that would be compatable with their existing resurfacing acetabular cup in the event a revision is required?

Whatever source you are reading is incorrect, in most cases I know about.

The doctors have a record of both the acetabular cup and femur cap. I carry a card in my wallet telling the size of both my components in case I would have accident or problem where my femur cap would have to be replaced.

The MOM THR by Smith & Nephew and the BHR are the same components except the THR has a long stem on the femur cap component.  They are definitely interchangable in most cases as far as I understand.

I also know that most other devices are normally interchangable too since they also have MOM THRs with the same components.

It is just important that the doctor places the acetabular cup properly so it can be used for a revision.

There have been cases of people that have had their hip resurfacings revised without removing the acetabular cup already.

Don't feel stressed out - normally there is a MOM THR cap that can be fitted to your existing cup.

I am not sure where to find the information for you.  I will write to S & N or some of the doctors and try to get a statement for you.

Next time you have a check up - ask your own surgeon.  That's is the place to get the most accurate information.
