Quote from: Vt waddler on August 21, 2009, 07:34:37 AMI am really trying to concentrate on rehabbing myself with better posture, as well as gait.

One of the most challenging aspects of my rehab was just this, and it still is 6 months out. I was unaware of how altered my posture and gait had become prior to surgery. Apparently I had also developed the ability to alter gait and posture to accommodate the slightest discomfort with out conscious thought. This ability survived the surgery and as I recover I now make myself think about standing straight and walking "normally".

Glad to hear you are doing well.

Kyle,
You are absolutely correct, and by the way, I appreciate your input being 6 months out.
I have found 2 tricks pretty quickly (still looking forward to further professional pt next week) that are helping me out some...On a few of my walks I have continued to use both crutches, set them up an inch to high- which forces me to walk upright without the slouch
caused by my hips. Also keep them in closely to my feet-which doesn't allow me to waddle and walk (g)..secondly, when I walk with my cane (doc said it was optional) if I hold it a few inches out from my belly, with both hands sideways acrossed my front, I can judge and see if I'm "waddling"..If I can keep the cane from swinging--no waddle..

Oh well, my entirely rookie (me) tips for the day
LOL!

Time for an update, it's been 7 1/2 weeks now since my bilat surgery. For the most part, my right hip is pretty much pain free, but my left hip still has twinges of pain when walking, more of an ache I'd say. I feel as though it is coming from the joint, but who's to say, could be muscle etc. Have stopped taking the narcotic pain meds, but still have to knock down some ibuprophen now and again. Countinuing with oupatient therapy twice a week, but expect to be going for a while longer -as long as it takes...:*) (insurance will cover 30 visits per year-was told no copay, but I'll see it then beleive it (g))
Have about 90 degrees on the left hip and maybe 100 degrees on the right. Pedaling my spin bike (total novice, bought it off ebay presurgery, figuring it would be helpful and I can ride it in the winter---leaves are already changing color!) doesn't seem to cause any pain in either hip..so onward we go...Next appt. with the surgeon is on Oct 21st.
Vt less of a Waddler.
