Hola,
Back from surgery with Doctor Su. Everything about Dr. Su was as advertised. He
is warm, caring, confident and obviously very talented. A few observations...

•By far the worst part was the 3 1/2 hour wait time before surgery. The anxiety
of not knowing what to expect made the wait seem like 12 hours.
•Before surgery, a nurse came in to shave the left side of my ass. This was
surprisingly pleasurable and I plan on shaving the other side of my ass when I
get back on my feet.
•The ride to the OR was surreal....it felt like a dream sequence heading down
hallways that looked straight out of a space ship. I was surprised to find the
OR room freezing and a bunch of people waiting for me with rock music blaring.
-Dr Su told my wife my hip was in pretty bad shape...took over 2 hours to
complete.
•The nurses in the recovery room told me that I woke up singing the theme song
from SpongeBob SquarePants...I think I watch that too much with my kids.
•After I got feeling back in my legs, I was in a tremendous amount of pain and I
kept telling the nurse it was a 9 out of 10. She kept telling me to push the
"pain button", but that didn't seem to help. Finally after about 2 hours she
gave me a direct shot of morphine and off I went.
•Come to find out the epidural needle had come out of my back at some point and
when i was pressing the "Pain Button" it was just dripping into the sheets.
• Walked for the 1st time about 15 hours after surgery...painful but what a
relief.
- Left the hospital about 48 hours after surgery...piece of advice for those who
have small children...staying another night isn't the worst thing and I maybe
should have considered it.
- I have to admire you Bi-lats out there...the 1st few mays must have been alot
rougher for you.
- Day 4 now and all is well..took a shower today and looking forward to rehab.
Already walking on crutches up and down the street.
- I know the newbies have heard this before...but it's not that bad! Get a good
surgeon and do your research!

Happy to be here....

Just had two shots from my doc, he said it could last up to a year, well one week has passed and the pain is coming back. He said I was a was a canadiate for resurfacing. How long did you wait before you had it done? I hear you can wait too long and it might cause you to pass the point of having it done. I am pretty confused.

Jay,
I actually waited for a year and a half before getting my resurfacing. The first two Docs I saw when I started to have aggravated hip pain wanted me in surgery the next day for a THR. I found this web site and then called Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. I was trying to get Dr. Su but he wasn't on my plan and they referred me to Dr. Boettner. After an examination by Dr. B, his first question was, "Why are you in such a hurry to get your hip replaced ?" He took a conservative medical approach and we monitored my hip condition regularly. At the end of October, this year, he stated that the window for resurfacing was closing. 5 weeks later I had the surgery and now I'm 18 days post op. If you've got a good doctor, trust his/her judgement. Pain is not always an accurate indicator for when the procedure is necessary. My pain could have been "tolerable" for quite some time but by the time it became intolerable, I would have had no choice but THR.
