Dave, I used a Polar Care machine for icing after the surgery.  It is nice because you can leave it on for a long time (until the ice inside the container melts and the gets warm) and the hip pad straps on easily and feels comfortable on your body.  Someone put it on me before I woke up from the surgery, and it stayed on until I got out of bed the next day.  The nurses replenished the ice whenever it was needed during the night.  I used it for several hours each day for the first week, and after that any time I increased my walking and got a bit sore.  It felt good, but in my case, I still had quite a bit of swelling for the first week.  Perhaps the swelling  would have been a lot worse without the Polar Care?  In any case, it definitely felt good.

Dave,

I also used a polar care machine the first two weeks after surgery but then received a pair of compression shorts that work much better.  Check out 110playharder these are amazing and the best way I have found to ice, better than anything I have ever used.  You have a full compression 3/4 length tight that has compartments all the way around the hip, quad and knee area.  It comes with ice packs that soak in warm water and they then fill up to about 1/2 inch thick.  You dry them off, cut to correct size and then insert in the pockets and can walk, sit, do anything while you have compression and Ice going.  No wet mess, just pull the ice packs back out and put in the freezer and re-use later.  Seriously these are amazingly easy to use, much better than anything I have ever used for icing the past 20 years.  I will have all my athletes use these after long/hard workouts to faster recover, rather than sitting in an ice bath.

I showed Dr. Ball yesterday and he was very impressed and is going to test a pair.  It would have been perfect to wake up after surgery with these on as I would have had compression and Ice going at once.

These are great posts to read!  It's nice to hear about someone else who has done the surgery, and come out on the other side feeling good and improving so well!  It motivates others who are suffering with pain, and are reaching thus procedure....

Congrats on your new hip!  You will be back in action soon!  It sounds like you are doing great.  Just don't overdo it.  It's easy to think you are better than you really are and if you push too hard , you will go backward slightly.  Just be patient.

I'm in Temecula...not far from you, but I opted to go to dr. Gross...although I seriously considered Ball....doing it locally was probably nice!  Keep us posted on your recovery!

Welcome to the club! Your sleep will get better soon too.  I noticed that it took a while..maybe 8 weeks, but eventually I had very litle pain if I. Laid on the incision and sleeping on my side or stomach was fine.  I was sleeping on my back before surgery...which wasn't how I wanted to ...but due to my arthritis I had to...

Roch, I checked out the compression shorts.  They look interesting.  I might have to get a pair to try after I have my other hip fixed.  Thanks for the info!

Roch-

Well I ordered the juggler's shorts today.  Your commission will be on it's way soon.  They look great and will be handy for my upcoming surgery.  I bought them because they look like they will be great after surgery recovery for workout recovery.  I am a big believer in ice therapy.

Thanks for the recommendation.
