What I loved about my doctor is that he respected the fact that I was trying to do everything in my power to deal with the issues rather than turning to drugs.  He never once said let's try some of this stuff first.  He saw the bone on bone and resurfacing was the long term solution.  For me it is quality of life and prolonging the inevitable is no way to go through life especially as we get older.  My OA came on slowly and then accelerated quickly to the point where I could not walk and was falling over like a drunk....LOL  Some people have great results with medications but it is just not my cup of tea.  I was fortunate to find a surgeon who agreed with me.  On that note I agree with everyone else that says get another opinion.

That's a bummer about the cortizone.  I knew it was not going to fix my OA, but I did use one injection to reduce the inflammation that I think was associated with a labral tear.  I knew the outcome was going to be HR, but I figured I could get a few months without pain and do some more research to figure out who and where I was going to go to.  I really think the cortizone (pain relief) gave me a little mental support and it was needed at that time.

I'd keep researching and maybe you can get into see someone sooner than Sept.  Although I hear Su is one of the best.

Sept 26 is pretty good with me.  I'm working at the World Trade Center and I want to be here for 9/11 and then I need to have a problem with my shoulder fixed before I can get to the hips.  I want to be able to swim while I'm recovering so I need to get this problem fixed first.  This was the third time Dr Boettner has given me cortisone.  The first on got me almost a year, second one six months.  I originally told him that I wanted to get more time out of these hips, I didn't think that I would have so much trouble so soon

No time is close enough when you're in pain, but you're right, september will soon be here.

I saw my shoulder doc today, Dr Frank Cordasco at HSS.  He repaired my right shoulder in 2002 and both my knees in 2006 so now he'll take care of this problem on Sept 14.  I'll be right on schedule

I now have an appointment with Dr Scott Marwin at NYU Joint Desease on Sept 17.  By the end of September I should have a good idea of what's in store for me.

Right now I'm in Point Pleasant NJ.  It's amazing how unstable I am walking on the beach or trying to stand in the waves.

Best wishes on your upcoming shoulder procedure.  It sounds like this is clean up.  I can't imagine having a major shoulder procedure before the hip.  I am so glad I have the upper body strength I do as I recover.

Then you are going to follow it up with an appointment on your hip?  Good luck with the diagnosis and options.

The surgery on the shoulder is for a tear in the labrum.  It's a work injury and I have to get it done first so I can do longer, harder swim workouts and focus on swimming as I recover from the hips.  My visit with Dr Marwin is Aug 17, not Sept, so it's only a week and a half away.

I'm interested to hear what Marwin has to say.  I bet you'll get a pretty different opinion from an HR surgeon as opposed to other ortho's.  Good luck.
