I am interested in knowing if those of you that have trained in Judo or Hapkido are you able to be thrown, and take falls, particularly from waist height? That is, do you allow people to throw you, and do you land on the surgical side?

I trained in Hapkido, but no longer do, having strayed from the path into TKD. You might want to ask folks that do MMA as well, since there's that element there. I do remember those falls, and while spectacular in their sound, I remember coming up pretty well since I was taught how to fall.

I think there's plenty of people who have fallen after surgery, especially people on bikes, etc. I'd look in all of those, but you're right, the judo / MMA / ***do practitioners would be the closest.

Well I'm hoping to return to boxing, judo, submission wrestling&bjj. I've written muay Thai and mma but I don't mind making a compromise. I spoke to Mr Treacy about judo and he said he has done a champion player before and he returned to competitive judo again.

Mr Treacy said when I asked about restrictions he placed post surgeory and he said personally he didn't like people playing rugby or running marathons regularly but then he also said he has lots of patients who don't listen to him and are still doing great.

Hello..

I am 2.1/2 years since by LBHR with Mr McMinn.

I have been involved in boxing and MMA for a large part of my life...this is where I am.

I train 2/3 times per week, this does involve weights and kettlebell  for one of those days. The other day is strictly boxing and sparring....

MMA and ground work-: I have only recently allowed myself to be slammed from standing to the floor and although I have no issues I am cautious of this ( not sure how you can be cautious about being taken to the ground ). I do lots of grappling with no issues, I can roll on the floor really well and my legs are as good as before ( apart from i'm 2.1/2 years older )

oh..i'm 45 and I do access my training as I go...train smart.

I really hope I get back to training proper after I fully recover!

I'm at 11 months and have taken falls on mats, also fell on ice at 3 months with no ill effects. I kick Thai pads now, though at reduced power because I'm still getting my strenght back, but I fell pretty robust generally, I certainly don't worry about it.

hernanu

Good to see you're doing well, Gary. You're hitting the pads now? I'm lagging a bit on the legs, having just started on roundhouse kicks. Good to know about the falls on mats, it's not part of my training now, but good to know.

Dannywayoflife

Cool. I used to train at sol filberts zt fight skool. I'm really hoping to be able to get back to a decent level post op. I think so long as the NHS fund my op I'll be done before Xmas. Do you have any good post op physio tips for me mate?

You can follow my progress in hip stories: I haven't updated for a while because I buggered my ankle (on the other side) 2 months ago and that's been holding me back. It's taking ages, I actually suspected it was fractured but I'm told I wouldn't be able to run on it if it was (they don't know me very well!)

The main thing to focus on is abduction, glutes medius, keep stretching the psoas, strength for the first few months, no impact for 6 months.

Good luck!

Dannywayoflife

Thanks Garry I keep that in mind. When I asked Mr Treacy about impact he said not for a year but after that fill your boots. I'm going to get my mate to help me rehab he's just qualified as a sports therapist but has no experience of anything like this songood real world info is a great help!

This thread hasn't seen any activity for a few years now and I was just wondering if any of the folks who posted here are still around.  I am a long term juido player and have been told by 3 docs that I need a new hip.  I really wish to remain active on the mat and would like to consider resurfacing as an alternative to a total hip replacement.  I was hoping that some of the folks on this thread might still be active here and could tell us how they're doing.  Thanks.
