Annie- My condition seems to be related to dysplasia (not severe but enough to cause problems at this stage of my life).  My mother too blames herself to a certain degree since we did not know as I grew up.  I suspect eventually the left side might have problems too.  Right now though, the left is fine.  I sure hope fixing the right hip doesn't shift my mechanics in a way that is detrimental to the left hip.  I am somewhat concerned about that.

I think I know why it's my right hip that has the problem and the left is fine.  Like I said in my first post I am a police officer, 30 yrs in patrol carrying a gun on my right hip.  Getting in and out of the cruiser your always banging against something with the gun. I have been in some knock down drag out fights and landed on the right side more than once.  I know at least 5-7 other officers who have either had surgery on their right hip or who need it. I have gone through about 5 holsters in 30 years on the same hip.  The doctors cant pinpoint this as the reason but it seems like a reasonable conclusion.

Aerial, did Dr. Gross say anything to you about problems in your other hip?  If not, probably you do not have a problem at this time.  I was not aware of any problem in my left hip, but it evidently looked just as bad on the x-ray as my right hip.  He told my daughter that, based on the x-rays alone, he would not have known which hip to operate on when he operated on my right hip.  The strange thing is that I really did not notice any pain on the left side until I had the right side fixed.

Lop, you are very funny!

May well be, since we all seem to have pushed the envelope in some way, as well as having some tendency towards the problem. I think my stretching / high impact from martial arts, as well as repetitive stress from weight lifting may have contributed.

I guess we all have our theories, but in the end, would you have been happy sitting a desk?  You've done a lot of good and may be paying for it, but at least there's a good procedure for you with good chance for an excellent result.

No Dr. Gross said nothing about my "good" hip so I hoping it really is in good shape.  It looks like it has a lot of joint space yet.
