I'm a pretty competitive cyclist, although I'm 52, but still race Pro/1/2 races and Elite Masters Races.  I will be meeting with Dr. Rector Nov. 29 for my first appointment.  Am a little nervous.  I'm hoping I haven't missed my window of opportunity to get this hip resurfaced.  Anyone have any experience with Dr. Rector in Boulder?  Seems like everything I've heard about him has been positive.  I posted something earlier, a couple months ago, but can't seem to find it.  There was one guy who contacted me, and I'd like to get ahold of him again.  He's scheduled to have surgery Nov. 30th with Dr. Rector.  Any cyclist out there who have had this done?  Would love to hear from you and about your recovery time and experiences.

I think you're looking for Boomer, but I've adopted him even though I don't bike and Denver makes me light headed.  Curt

Curt,

Glad to hear you staying with me to the bitter end. You're going to get me through this and then
I'm going to help John D. In any way I can.

Three hours at the hospital yesterday for pre surgery testing. Wow, are they ever thorough! Spending that much time at the hospital gave me an appreciation for how good our healthcare people are. I was immensely impressed.

Boomer, you're going to be fine, and you are stuck with me.  I live alone with 100 smelly cats and have no friends (well, not yet, but maybe).  I'm looking forward to your "post surgery" stuff too.  BTW, all the testing good so far?  Bone density and the other farfignoogan?

And John, you shouldn't be nervous.  The window of opportunity is pretty fargin big for somebody in your condition and age (really glad that you're older than me!).  The only hard part of the resurfacing journey so far has been the desire to get really active again NOW, because my hip feels so much better, and then taking it slow so I don't mess it all up by being too aggressive.  Only way for me to hold back is to remember how horrible being jacked up with that hip was.  Don't want to go back to that...EVER!

Curt,

The nurse/patient advocate who spent the afternoon with me said everything was great. They even took a chest x-ray. I guess if there is a problem I will find out when I see Dr. Rector on the 17th. Don't expect any issues. Except for bad hips and mild insanity, I'm pretty good. Two Ortho's looked at my x-rays in the last six months and said I was good to go for resurfacing.

I am going to be a yakking fool when I get to the other side. A pretty easy transition.

Started practicing with my forearm crutches today.

Where's your home Curt?

You're ready, Boom.  I live in Virginia Beach VA by Norfolk.  I'm looking forward to running out in Denver again soon.  We stay near old Stapleton when we are in town, used to jog out there.  Good for my puny lungs.

Its been fun seeing you get ready.  You are going to be so pleased when you find out how good it can be (and the catheter is out if the demons use one).  Take care.  Curt

Boomer,

Do you know what approach Dr. Rector uses when he performs his hip surgery?  Do you know if he detaches any of the muscles?

Sounds like they made you come in before hand to do all your pre-surgical testing, etc???

Somewhere, I think it's on this sight, their are interviews with all the major players in HR about their approach.  They are all very positive about their approach, but most agree that you should choose your doctor based on his skill rather than his approach

John,
At 12 weeks post-op I'm feeling pretty good on the bike.  I'm feeling about 75% strength wise, but 125% stronger than I was pre-op.  Up to 2 30-40 mile outside rides/week.  I'm 50.
You'll be good...

Well,

thought I'd add to this topic since I was on here earlier.  I'm 2 weeks 3 days post op and all that worrying was for nothing.  I can't believe how quickly I'm healing and getting around.  I ditched my cane at 12 days post op (although I carry it with me on the long walks).  At two weeks to the day post op I got on the stationary bike and rode 1/2 hr.  The last three days I've been able to ride an hour each day, and follow that up with a two mile walk, and my home PT exercises.  Yesterday, did the hour ride, 2 mile walk and a 1 1/2 hour stint at the PT office doing all the exercises they wanted me to.  I was a little achy when I got home, but today feel fine.  Already got my 2 mile walk in.  The bike is the best.  I use very little resistance and it really seems to losen up the hips, and has helped the swelling come down.  My PT was very impressed with my ROM yesterday when I came into the office.  He said I was way ahead of the game.  But, I was extremely fit coming into surgery; riding much harder this Winter then normal.  I knew I'd be out for awhile once I went in for the surgery.  Anyway, so far all's good.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

I was having a very slow, uneventful and most enjoyable recovery until Big John D started ramping things up. Suddenly it occurred to me that perhaps I was taking things a bit too easy. I just didn't seem to have the energy or motivation to kick it up a gear until John showed me I needed to be doing to get back in the saddle strong this spring. So the last few days I have started doing the six flights of stairs a few times a day at work, walking a couple of miles after work and getting on the stationary bike. I thought all of this activity would make me feel just awful, but the exact opposite has happened. I suddenly have more energy and look forward to working on my recovery. Today I purchasesd a yoga mat and large foam roller some can get serious with the floor exercises again as well. My recovery is accelerating. Pretty exciting for me because I was beginning to have those "is that all there is thoughts". Now I looking forward to bursting out of the gate.

Thanks for the motivation John. Oh, and I am turning the big rings these days and looking forward to riding with you this summer

Live strong

Recovery gets better.  I am 6months post op from my second (fortunately they are on different hips ;D) and I went out Sat and did a solid 3 hour ride, include 9 hill climbs and kept the heart rate in zone 2.  I am 56 and love riding my bike
