Danny, Inspiring goals. Why will you limit your Thai kicks? I get your approach of boxing/BJJ, like Nog or Mir. With good BJJ, you can throw with less restriction, a big part of Wanderlie's success.  Do you want a professional career?

Seems to me an important part is not just the hip joint, but the soft tissues, both from the surgery and other prior injuries. How is your body in that regard?

Problem for me is that I sustained 3 very bad tears to my left quad, rectus femoris, last Christmas. Even today my left leg is first to get very sore with "over-training". For a while I was doing leg press/extentions 2 sets each 12-15 reps 3.5 times a week with zero issues, so it is largely functional. Still, I have been told that the fatty scar tissue will never be as strong as before. But I wounder, what treatments can reduce that scar tissue at this point, allowing muscle to take it's place to a maximum degree. Any advice?

Hay jeremy,
I don't think that any prostetic could long term handle the shearing force of a Thai kick. I used to be able to kick 120 pound bags and they would swing nearly horizontal. I have been bless with few things in life but powerful Thai kicks was defiantly one of them. I have had a catalog of other injuries over the years but I'm fairly healthy other than the hip/leg.
However since my initial diagnosis around 18 months ago I have been totally unable to train and along with the crazy hours I work and depression I developed the worst diet in the world! And managed to put on around 30-40 pounds! So eventually when in a few months when I'm able to get in the gym I'm initially going to see if I can get back in reasonable shape.
In honesty I've trained with and fought guys who've gone on to have proper careers of fighting but I just fight because I like it. In my work I've had hundreds of fights where as competitively I've had around 15/20 of various types but about the same again if you include judo and grappling.
So really I have 3 goals first is to be able to walk again and carry out my normal daily life. Second is to be able to get down to 170-180 again and be fit ie gym fit. And third I'd like to be able to train in my fighting sports properly again. I don't mind adapting my style and altering things to be able to train and fight I'm not even bothered about winning I just want to train hard and fight hard.
On the subject of breaking down scar tissue one of the other members on here has asked me the same question. My best mate is literally qualifying as a sports therapist in a few months he is using me as a case study. He knows all about breaking scar tissue down do I'm going to pick his brains about it and then do a thread on here as I think it will be useful for all hippies.

Hi Danny, I appreciate how a Thai kick might have that affect. I did north american kickboxing for several years but never or saw the kind of Thai kick you describe. Seems a good idea to hold that kind of power in reserve.
My story almost parralels yours. 2011 was a hellish year in many ways, with many scans, multiple doctor visits, wrong reports, diagnosed OA, soft tissue injuries in context of treatment, etc. Could barely walk at one point. There were several years of nagging groin/achiles strains before that. This, after a lifetime of growing up on a farm and activity both the gym and sports. From athelete to invalid, although vastly recovered now. This site has been a Godsend. Hats off to Pat and all of you. So, I can deeply relate to your last 18 months. It's a story most people don't understand, or don't want to hear.

That's a very solid history of fighting, obviously. I am sure you will suceed with all 3 goals, probably in that order. You want to compete in MMA and grappling?

A post on breaking up scar tissue would be great. It would be good to see what everyone knows. Laser and Active Release Therapy supposidly help. A major concern has to be causing re-injury or a new chronic problem. Any intervention runs a risk potentialy. Would be good if there is research on the methods too.

I'll be happy to just get back in the cage for 1or2 fights. I think boxing will be easier on my new hip so hopefully I'll be able to do more of that. I've always really liked grappling but the thing that really grips me about bjj is the willingness just to flop on your back! So I intend on really combining judo and bjj, as judo is awesome in real life, possibly along with boxing one of the 2 best disciplines for real world situations.
