I think this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it with a search.

Does anyone know generally how much more weight you gain from the installation of an HR device? (2 BHRs in my case)  I'm not talking about being lazy and getting fat.  I'm talking about the weight of bone loss from shaping the femoral head and acetabulum (maybe 0.5 lb of material?) vs the added weight of a standard sized BHR (52 mm ball with 56mm cup) (maybe 3/4 lb?).  I recall playing with one in the doc's office and it felt pretty hefty.  It's probably in McMinn's book, but I thought it would be interesting to post.

I was told by my insurance health survey that I am overweight at 160 lbs at 5'6"  ??? (standard BMI stuff)  I started thinking I could blame it on the 2 new BHRs I've got.

Tin,
There was a recent thread about this and someone said that they weigh a bit over 2 pounds each. That would account for almost a 5 pound weight increase. sigh...

Maybe whoever posted that will see your thread and respond. I sure hope they are wrong!  :)

I remember the thread but I can't see that one bhr weighs over a kilo. I know there heavy but I dont think there that heavy. Good question though.

I found it at one time, I wrote down "532 Grams, or 18.77 oz", I don't recall a size being mentioned in the data I saw.

Thanks.  I'll ask my doc one of these days how much mass they generally assume will be lost from tissue and bone removal, probabaly not much, and then I can add in the average weight of a BHR, which I think is what about Danny is saying on weight.  I bet I could find it in one of these papers around here.  So if you assume you lost less than a 1/4 lb of body tissue (something the size of a hamburger, fitting, huh?)  but then added in 2 lbs, for a blateral.  You could actually see that dif on a standard house scale.

So according the standard BMI scales, I'm about 4 lbs overweight.  I could probably chalk up 2 lbs to my prosthesisssss.

Interesting.

Based upon my current weight, I think Dr. Gross put about 6 extra ones in my back stomachs!!

Curt;

I asked Dr Brooks that question before I left the hospital, he said the BHR was 1.2 lbs and the amount of bone removed was "crumbs".  About 19 oz. or so, close to,what Dave mentions above for the implant.
