Gav,
Where in your groin is the pain? Have you seen your x rays? Just thinking if the cup isn't placed perfectly one of your tendons could be rubbing.

I went to my physical therapist when I was having pain jogging after being cleared to run. The therapist recommended that I find another form of exercise. He said if his brother came to him he would recommend that. He said that you never know how long your hip will last and why chance it. I think I will beat the elliptical into me. I hate that machine!

I was cleared at one year.I had pain at about 3/4 of a mile. I always felt fine until that point, then soreness "in hip"  was afraid to try pushing through it

I'm at 1 year five months on the first, 1 year two months on the second. It does depend on what you did before and how much of a layoff you had (muscle atrophying, etc.), but a couple of things - if the surgeon has checked the hip and said "fine", then I'd trust that.

There is the illeopsas muscle (lower back, through the hip to the groin area) that is also a concern for us. If this gets bothered, using a roller, massage and other treatments may help to get you over that hump, if you want to run further.

Good luck, and I wouldn't take uninformed information for gospel. If you want to run, there's plenty of folks here that are doing that successfully. If your muscles and bones are ok, then ...

(My philosophy is that if I'm going to run farther than 1.5 miles, I'll just get my car  ::) )

I just had my other side done Dec. 15th.  My incision is not healing properly at my pantline. I was put on antibiotics and my Dr. said it's getting better. I have not done much between my incision [anterior aproach]discomfort and winter weather.I am waiting for my gym membership to be unfrozen to get on a bike. I can't run for one year so I need other forms of exercise.

hernanu

Bummer, sorry to hear that. Should heal soon enough, don't sweat the recovery, as you know it will come on its own.

All I can tell you is that it did take me about a year to run comfortably, you'll be back on the saddle in due time and then you'll crank along. We just deal with what we need to, then go on.

Its been 2 years. bhr on one side. Dr. insisted no running ever. I figured he was just very conservative. I researched and found that the bone will grow into the cup and density should return within 2 yrs.  So, I walked, walked, hiked, all over Yosemite, Desolation wilderness and then to the top of Kilimanjaro. It was fabulous getting my mobility back!
I started running (ok, jogging, 6 mph) 6 months ago. a mile here, a mile there, then two then 3. Once or twice a week. Then 3-4 twice a week. I try to stay at no more than 4-6mi two to three times a week now. I just did my first 1/2 marathon, here in Hawaii. A little far. Pain after mile 10 so I'll keep it down to 4-6 range. Love it! (64 yrs old, 5'10", 157lbs).
I figured that since there is no cartilage anymore the metal banging on the metal gets the bone irritated bringing on pain.  I will listen and do less miles.
Just Love it!

I was a runner before. Just started the sixth month and have run 6 times.  First two, only partial run walks for a mile.  Next two one mile each with last 1/4 slow and uncoordinated.  Final two about a mile and half with better strength and less awkward.
What pain I have is in the flexors in the front and some near the side.  The awkwardness is coming from the leg/gait not tracking fluidly forward and back once the leg and hip get tired.  It IS improving rapidly.  After months and months on elipticals, gliders and bikes, as well as lots of walking, I am convinced that jogging is its own special motion.
The impact from plyometrics or jogging may be stressful on the device, but Dr. Gross doesn't prohibit it so he must be confident that it can take it, and I believe that impact is good for bone density.  Just my opinion...but it is VERY exciting to get active like that again.

I am an avid runner.  Having resurfacing in 18 days from Dr. Su.  I've dobe 6 marathons, a dozen half marathons and hundreds of shorter races.

In addition, unlike normal runners, I also do sprinting at master's track meets (100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, etc) and have been nationally ranked.

Dr Su says I should be able to sprint again (after full recovery of course), but we'll see.  Just losing one second off my 100 meter dash time means I will not be able to sprint competeitvely again.  But if I can run for fun and excercise that will be good.

Most of the post-op running issues I have read about here are soft tissue stuff - scar tissue, etc.  I use Active Release Technique from by guru and plan on having him work on me a lot as I come back to form.  Looking forward to being on the other side.

I personally think that a full recovery before returning to impact like running is the key. I will be waiting the full 12 months. Actually I'll be extending it to the 1st of jan 2013. Just to be sure.

HI Sean, I am nearly 2 yrs out from HR sx now, and running is still the one thing I feel I cannot do well. I do jog short distances, and it is a little "weird" feeling. Not really painful... it almost feel like my HR'd leg is a little slow in responding in time to how fast (and keeping cadence) my nervous system is telling it to move. I feel that if I ran for a long enough time, or ran too fast, I would "bite it". Not something I want to do with a HR! So I stick to a slow jog, short distance, and otherwise do any other activity I want. I ride a horse, hike mountain trails, ride a stationary bike, etc. Maybe it can take some people longer than 2 yrs to heal. Maybe I will never run well again. I can live with either outcome. My HR has been so positively life changing!!  Good Luck, Lu

Closing in on 7 months post-op.
Been running outside 2x a week 4 mile run during the week and 8 miles on the weekend.
One more elliptical/treadmill combo workout during the week as well, so about 16 or so miles.
Down to a 10:43 pace and that is with taking a 1-2 minute walk break each mile.
Strength and speed have been comfortably improving each week for the last 8.
Only doing about 10-20% on the road, the remainder is on trails.
Biking on the days in between too, did 43 today, my longest yet. About 100 a week.
Going to see Dr. Su this Wednesday just to make sure all is good.
Only thing bothering is a little bursitis flare around the trochanter, but that has gotten better in the last two weeks.
Does feel nice to be getting back to my lifestyle.

I am 16 months post-op Left BHR and run pain free. I never feel any joint pain at all. Patience is the key!

Tin Soldier

I'm closing in on 7 months also since RBHR.  I started running a bit about 2 months ago.  I think it was a touch early.  I started doing some moderate uphill sprints and it felt great, but the downhill was probabaly not the best.  After about 3 miles, I'd get a little pain in the front of the hip.  Enough that I would just stop running and walk for awhile.  I think I need to do more hip strengthening work.  I'm hopiing it will go away with time, but I'm also like MrHappy in that I'm fine with shorter distances and happy to just get out and exercise.

Great stuff!   How much did you run before you, er, got derailed by the hip?

Hey Arrojo...I do have a distance running and tri background for some years.
Last 6 months prior to surgery I did zero running except for two IM 70.3 races that I killed myself in knowing I was having my surgery...not so smart.  I hope to return to some long distance races sparingly and if my body allows.  If not, plenty else to live for pain free... :)
