I live in Minnesota, US and am frantically searching for a qualified orthopedic surgeon and through my Internet research, all leads to Dr. Vijay Bose in Chennai India over and over.  Do you have experience with him?  I would really like to hear from you.  I have never had to arrange for a surgery and am scared out of my wits!!!  How do you determine or know that you have chosen the best - maybe I am putting too much into this but I really feel that I need to find the perfect doctor as I am putting my life in his/her hands...

I am sooo nervous about leaving the United States.  I met with an orthopedic surgeon in the midwest (US)yesterday and he has just about scared me out of having a BHR.  I drove home (2 hours) and wondered what I really was thinking - really feeling like I was an idiot.  He said that I really should not even consider a BHR, that it is of higher risk, lenghthier recovery and more blood loss than a THR - which he does.  He said that I really would not be a candidate for that.  And why would I want that when I would have to be back for a THR??  He said that he has done 5 resurfacings but I did not find anything that can verifiy that he is qualified for that at all...

I feel that I am a strong candidate for BHR - 49 years old, active (until the pain took over) and have strong bone density.  I do however, have a problem with DVT - deep vein thrombosis but my local doctor as well as others have said this is not an issue and they can deal with it...

Thank you so much for any comments coming my way!  :)

Hi Deb

Don't believe your surgeon.

90,000+ of us have BHRs.  My surgery took 45 minutes, no extra blood required and no heavy meds after 2 days in the hospital.  I was on one crutch at 4 days and no crutches at 4 weeks.  When I got back from Belgium after 10 days post op, I thought I would try PT here.  They only kept me 2 sessions since I was so far ahead of the normal THR patient they had no idea what to do with me.

My friend, Vicky Marlow went to Dr. Bose in India.  He is one of the best in the world.  He will give you a free consultation via email if you write him and attach your x-rays in a digital format  .jpg     Here is her story  at the bottom of the list  http://www.surfacehippy.info/vickyscorner.php

Here are a bunch of Bose patients' stories  http://www.surfacehippy.info/hipstories.php#Dr._Bose_Hip_Stories_   He is a wonderful person and great surgeon.

don't let some old fashioned local yokle doctor scare you.  Take some time and read the stories then send Dr. Bose an email. He is very friendly and will answer every question you ask of him.

I would never trust a doctor that new, personally.   The learning curves indicate a surgeon needs at least 50 - 100 resurfacings to become experineced.  I want a doctor that has done hundreds.  In De Smets case - 3000+

Look at my list and see if there is anyone close to you that is experienced http://www.surfacehippy.info/listofdoctors.php

Many of us had to travel abroad to get what we wanted.  I traveled 2 years ago before the BHR was FDA approved.  I was older and wanted an experienced surgeon.  I had to pay for my surgery since I did not have health insurnace.  Even with health insurance I would have choosen Dr. De Smet.  Dr. Bose was on my list, but I did not want to fly 28 hours to India.  Many others have done that.

You may have to watch how far you travel with the DVT.

Why don't you check out Dr. Rogerson in WI.  http://www.surfacehippy.info/listofdoctors.php#Wisconsin   He has done over 250 and is very dedicated to hip resurfacing.  His recovery facility is modeled after Dr. De Smets of Belgium.  He has a lot of very happy patients.

Good Luck and keep in touch.
