Here is a link to the recall article by Smith & Nephew for the BHR. Very interesting.

Here is the Smith & Nephew pdf about the BHR Recall describing what size acetabular cups were involved.

"The product packaging for the notified complaint was for a 54 mm BHR Acetabular Cup, however inside was a 50 mm Acetabular Cup.  One more device has also been positively identified as being the reverse of this"

Pat, did you ever hear about problems arising from this?  It is difficult to believe that a surgeon would actually not check that the femoral and acetabular component fit together before placing them in a patient.

Pat Walter

I never heard a story about a patient with the wrong size cup or femur component.  I know people received letters about it if they were involved, but again, never heard anything that happened after that.  Pat

It would be interesting to hear from anyone who went through this.

Hi all,
An update on this is that some S&N BHRs were apparently recalled with letters sent out just before xmas. My local hospital have confirmed this, I am waiting for confirmation whether mine was one of them. I was refereferred to a different hospital as I have sever complications and alrealready have a date this month to have it taken out. Therefore they said they wouldn't have written to me if mine was affected. My understanding is this is different to the mislabelling previously. I will kekkeep you updated with my findings.

obxpelican

I wonder how long that had been going on?

Kind of a boneheaded thing, you would think that S&N would have people double and triple checking the labeling????

I wanted to double check and triple check mine when I was on the operating table but for some reason I was fairly incoherent and they wouldn't let me.  ???

With the 10 people in the OR and all of the double-checking in the prep room, like doc signing the butt cheek that you point to, each nurse asking you who you are and what your bday is, you'd think this would be just another procedure that gets more than one set of eyes on it before it gets installed.

hard to believe when the "tools" for the implants are size specific.  You would think all of them would have to be wrong for the surgeon not to notice.  I guess if you pound on it long enough...anyway, knock on wood that those problems are a thing of the distant past.

I guess I'm a bit confused. Is the BHR recall current or from 2007?

2007 I believe.

If my memory is correct there is a procedure in place to double check sizes now. This is what I remember from my surgery.

At the Swedish Ortho Center operating room they had reps. from the implant companies inspect and hand the implants to the staff & surgeon in the operating room who then double checked and inspected the implants for correct size before implanting them.

Don't quote me on this - as I was under the influence of strong drugs at the time -but I'm pretty sure that's how they do it now.

According to my Doctor's PA I was given a 46 head and a 52 socket. BHR Dr. Brooks.
I have had no problems since my surgery in July of 2010.
Has anyone heard anything more about doctors choosing deliberately larger sockets?

John C

Your numbers are a standard matched set. The confusion can come from the fact that the first number is for the outside diameter of the femoral head, and the second number is for the outside diameter of the socket. The inside diameter of a socket would fit the size of the femoral head, but that inside diameter number is not used.  For example, the outside diameter of my femoral head is 48, and the inside of my acetabular cup is a match for that, but the cup is listed as a 54, because that is the outside diameter. This number is used because it tells the surgeon about what size reamers should be used to prepare the bone, and gives a future reference for how much bone has been taken out in placing the cup; an important number to have. The internal diameter does not need to be listed since it is simply a match for the femoral head size.

Whew, I feel much better. Thanks for the clarification John C.
