I am curious if the second time is equivalent to the first surgery as far as pain and recovery. I am scheduled for second BHR in the fall. I hope it is easier and not worse! lol

Hi Oxley,

I believe it will be the same on your second hip because I had both hips resurfaced at the same time, and I could tell no discernible difference between the two.  My R hip is only lagging behind my L hip because I do so much driving (2 1/2 hours daily) to get to three different modalities of PT and recovery appointments most days of the week.

I think you will be good to go! :D

For me the second time around has been better.  The first hip was in way worse shape so there was more muscle atrophy.   Also knowing what to expect I worked on upper body strength to help move around, and of couse this time I have a good side.

The second time around was easier for me in many respects. I think I profited from knowing what was coming and the lower anxiety from the whole experience helped. I prepared better and was actually in better shape, having just finished PT for the first.

I also was given a silver bandage afterwards, had no stitches and didn't have to change the bandage, so that was great as far as comfort and being able to take showers. Otherwise, I thought it went really well. So for me, thumbs up the second time around.

My second one 3 weeks ago has gone easier, one explanation for that is the surgeon said he did the worst one first, by design.  My guess is your surgeon would do the same.  You do benefit from the knowledge of the process with the first one, what to expect, what will happen when, how to work through recovery etc.

The biggest thing I have learned here is that every person's experience is different, and moreover, each hip on the same person is different (mine sure were).

Hope it helps.
