Sorry you're hitting that, Rolls. Since you trust Dr. Marchand, it does make great sense to have him check on the right.

Something to check re:running pain

Check that the adductor muscles are not weak. Tightness down the glute/TFL/IT band can mean this is getting overused and normally the opposing muscle group are weak, the adductors. This could happen if overpronation and lack of roll in the foot and lead of from the big toe. Basically the gait is focussed more to the outside of the body, it should really be the inside close to the centre of gravity.

The foot should point forward, but this should come from the pelvis not the foot. It is the adductors job to move the leg in toward the midline and help stabilize the pelvis and also to asist in internal rotation and hence helping to stabilising the psoas, which hinges over the hip capsule.

So it could be down to muscle overuse in the abductors and weakness in the adductors, which often get neglected. It might not be the case but worth checking.

When running up hills the big glute max muscle is used more i.e extension of the hip.

BTW that Chi running sounds very interesting :)

I am almost nine months out and just completed a 10k. I completed a Olym tri four months out and was in miserable pain post run.  This run was no problem. . I notice the pain comes with increased speed.    If i push anything below at 10minI/mile, im gonna feel it.  Also the leg turnover doesnt come easy.  Its a slow process which i think best not to push.  I just know speed is coming back slowly.  Its my goal to beat my marathon pr of 3:43 next year and of course, IM Texas in sub 13.

Sorry if I missed it, but has anyone mentioned using anti inflamatories when you begin running.
I just hit 6 months post op, Dr. Gross patient. Have started jogging and just renew prescription.
Finding some discomfort after running and next day, thinking more muscular and this may help.

Wanted to see if anyone has used this approach. Was thinking I would use every couple of days, maybe same days as run. Hope everyone is running and recovering well....thanks...jb

The only thing with the long term use of anti inflamitories is I'm reliably told they inhibit tissue healing. If possible use ice

Rolls

Hello Again,
Been away from the website for quite awhile.  I had my right knee checked out by two doctors back in March and it is shot, severe arthritis, they recommend replacement.  I am not ready to remove more original parts.  So, I gave up running completely and a friend told me about Glucosamine and Fish Oil supplements.  I tried them before but never gave them much of a try.  This guy swore by them because his knees are very bad.  I gave them a good try, two months straight, kept on biking, and I am doing pretty good.  I do not take anti inflammatories at all anymore and seem to have great flexibility in my knee.  I almost want to try running, but I "think" I know better.  Still have the impingement feeling in my RBHR, and the occasional cramping and ankle pain.  Saw Dr. Marchand in March and he said not much more can be done besides revision of the hip and knee replacement.  The "old adage"...hip resurfacing done right by the most experienced surgeons are your best chance at success.  My left side is still awesome, so I see how some of you out there can do all that running, etc.  I am glad I did hip resurfacing, it still seems the way to go...to get "your GO back"
Take Care, Rolls
RBHR 2007 Snyder NWH,Boston not considered a success.  Still pain 5 yrs post surgery.  Snyder did Ganz procedure. LBHR 2011 Marchand SCH,RI is doing excellent, Marchand did it like it is supposed to be done.

Good to hear from you Rolls, sorry you're dealing with the knee. I have an acquaintance that had knee resurfacing and is really happy with it two years past.

I'm glad Dr. Marchand did right by you. Hope the impingement eventually lets up.

One of the things I did to be able to run quicker than protocol calls for is to adopt a front strike stride. This is probably a pose method approach but I never land on my heels. I am always on the ball of my foot which causes a cushion rather than a jolt when you land. It KILLS your calves at first but when you get them built up, it's pretty awesome. I also use Vibram 5 fingers for training. If you use those, start SLOW as they will set your calves on fire! I ran 2mi in them the first time and paid dearly.
