Oh, and I was having my leg collapse underneath me regularly - probably something similar to the numbness you are experiencing.
I have had vacations but usally adding up to no more then two weeks a year. My leg does get very wobbly when the knee joint goes numb. Appt tomorrow!

Hoyt,

I am 24 years old and just had an LBHR done by Schmitt on June 18, 2012.  I completely agree with Rob.....Schmitt is an awesome surgeon!  He is very very experienced, his entire staff is helpful, and I really feel relieved of a lot only being 6 weeks out.  Im sure when you meet with him tomorrow you will be confident in him as a surgeon more than capable of helping you.  I still have a very long road ahead of me, but I am already feeling like im noticing positive changes (pain level being the most pleasant).  I was also nervous about my decision.  But when you think about it, are you really living? Or just living with your pain? That was the question that pretty much solidified it for me.  Im ready to start enjoying everyday instead of making it through.  Hope this helps, and hope everything with your hip goes well!! feel free to message me with any questions.

Dustin,
Thanks for the reply and offer to message you. I just got home from my appt with Dr. Schmitt. I met him last year but I wasn't ready for surgery. You're right, I am living with the pain. I talked to my wife tonight and I'm going to try to schedule surgery for September 10th. We are going to attend the class the hospital offers for the surgery. Are you back to work yet? Sounds like your feeling pretty good!

Hoyt,
Everyone heals at different rates, but it is conceivable that you could be back at work part time after 2 weeks, full time after 3-4 if everything goes well and you have flexibility at your job.  I'm guessing you have a desk job?  This would only apply if that's the case, no physical labor.  I wish you well in September and a speedy recovery....it's really not that bad. You'll wish you had done it sooner!

Those words "are you really living when just living with pain" sums up pre- op life perfectly :)

I waited almost seven years from the initial symptoms showing up.  The xrays showed the damage.  The first thing offered was various ROM therapies for a couple years, then a few joint injections and then the inevitable THR talk with my ORTHO.  I am 9 weeks since my BHR.  I woke up after surgery pain free, obviously meds, my nurses kept the med levels at the right level, took a few meds with me when I left the Hospital, was off pain meds in a week and have had nothing more than minor discomfort since.
When your nurse tells you to start counting backwards do it with a smile because your life is about to change for the better!!!
Dr. Brooks at the cleveland clinic and his staff and all support workers are fantastic.

Dr. Schmitt is an excellent surgeon.  After the 6 month point I feel just like new.  I can go days without event thinking about my hip.  I have no regrets.  My life is becoming normal again, I can put on my shoes, socks, dress, touch my toes and don't even think twice anymore.  You are making a good decision to enhancing your life and getting back to normal.
