Hi John,  I just came back to this thread.  Congratulations and a great recovery and good luck at the State Championships!

Mine is still coming back, John - although I have a feeling as active as you are, yours will be back faster.

I noticed that in complex movements when kicking the heavy bag; I'm starting on spinning kicks, which need a lot of coordination between the two legs, hips rotating correctly, then a very quick push and rock from the hips to coordinate a powerful kick - the first times I did this without impact, or with low impact, the hips were all over the place.

Eventually (and fairly quickly), I felt more under control, but I still haven't tried any jumping kicks or (the grail of totally impractical kicks) jumping and spinning kicks. I get what you mean, and seem to go through that with every new technique I try. It improves each time though, so there must be some sort of persistent learning going on. I need some more proprioreception schooling, I guess.

Congrats on getting yourself to that level again. The wiffle game may show that things that rely on the smaller stabilizing muscles need more work to mend.

John,
Good luck in the state championship!  I too have a lack of knowing what my leg is going to do sometimes, glad to hear I'm not the only one.  I'm only 3 months post op so I figured it was just too early to be worried.  I have been riding daily and back to the gym for upper body and core work.  I'm only  averaging about 100 to 120 miles per week but my avg speed has been getting better on the same course...so I'm pleased with that.  Went and watched my buddies do a masters crit Sunday...that was fun!  Got to yell and tease while they flipped me off!  Lol!
Take care,
Joe

7month update.  Raced tonight.  Did a Pro 1-2 race.  40 mile crit. in 1:28.  Screaming fast.  Over 28 mph ave.  Finished 5th.  Two groups of two off the front, I went with 20 laps to go, couldn't quite bridge up, but stayed off the front for 5th.  Pretty excited.  Finally riding well.  Muscle in my butt, were the doc detached, ached after the race, but my hip felt great.

WOOHOO!!! That excellent news. So glad to hear it is all going so well and you are back in action properly. The future is bright!!

.... the only time I have ever aveaged 28 miles an hour was when I left my Garmin running and drove off with my bike on the car  ;D

Congrats John...
1 year post-op, my glutes are still a "pain in the ass"...
David
ps...I did a hard 90 mile ride yesterday, was great until I was not.  My ass still just "shuts down" after a certain point.

David, know what you mean.  Wonder if that will ever go away.  On long rides I can feel right where the glute was detached and reattached; especially if I do a lot of climbing.  Not as bad as it was, but still there.  Raced again today.  Finished last (won one prime), but that was after I helped set up my team mate for the win.  He beat the kid from Australia who won last night, and a kid who just got back from racing in Belgium all summer.  My team mate won the overall omnium which was nice for him.  He's getting married next week, so his riding days will be numbered for awhile.  ;)

Good for you, John.  It's great to hear how great you are doing.  I'm not riding at the level that you are but I never have any issues withmy glutes since they weren't detached.  For the past two weeks I'm not riding at all, I'm putting two additions on my house;

Cutting down, cutting up and stacking 90 ft trees

Stone work

Framing the additions

Yesterday I started a new roof for the whole house

The hips are doing great!

So you're taking it easy, Woodstock  ;D , good to hear you're doing all that. I helped a friend frame his new house, took us a weekend (eight skilled people and one unskilled future hippy), and had quite the beer fest after.

Woody - that's awesome.   I'm splitting wood, climbing trees, cutting up downed trees, building boats, tons of fairly heavy gardening, fixing the tractor,... getting in some soccer here and there and riding my bike to work.  So, not take away from the totally impressive discussion on riding 90 miles and racing criterions (criteria?), I just wanted to say I'm there, too.  No hip trouble whatso ever, other than wearing the rest of my body out all the time.

David and John - I've been on lesser distance rides and yeah, the glutes have a certain distinct difference now, they tire quickly.  Maybe there is something more focused that a PT could offer?

Good job you guys, great to hear succes about long ironmanny-sorts of things.
