Hi,

I wondered if anyone here could help:

I had my hip resurfaced 4.5 yrs ago and it has been brilliant until the last 2 wks
The last 2 wks it has been painful in the groin and occasionally the buttock
I have had an xray and it looks entirely normal, comparing to the original take post op it looks the same
But the groin pain persists...

Anyone have any ideas as to what could be the cause?

Many thanks!

Can I ask a few questions first?

What kind of activity level do you maintain?  Are you an exerciser?  What kind of intensity level?

Have you done anything recently that's different from your normal routine?

Is the doctor who looked at your x-ray the surgeon who did your surgery?  If not, are they a surgeon, and/or would they necessarily know what "normal" looks like (other than the comparison) for this kind of surgery/device?

Are you male or female?  Do you know what angle your acetabular cup was placed at?

Sorry to barrage you with questions, but I'm not sure anyone could give you decent advise other than "Call your surgeon" without more data.  You probably should call your surgeon anyway to be sure.

Good luck.

Hey DS, plenty of us have had a setback now and then. One thing to do, as I was advised on one of my setback / freakouts by my surgeon is to step back from activity for a bit and let the strain heal.

One of the possibilities is that your groin muscle is strained through normal activities and just needs to be babied a bit. If it persists, you do as you've done and let a pro take a look at it. If you're still in doubt, get a second opinion from one of the doctors listed here, but I would think that it is most likely a muscular thing.

I had one issue about a year along, where I got a sharp pain in my groin intermittently as I strode forward. It lasted about three weeks, then just went away. No idea why, but my doctor basically said to wait it out and that worked.

Hope it feels better soon.

Thanks hernanu, that is good to know

I have an appointment today with an experienced surgeon, so will see what he says

I'll post back once we know what we're dealing with!

Thanks again

Great advise already given - the pains I get sometimes - I often think are from exercising  - it would hurt even if I did not have some updated hardware!
