Everyone is so jazzed about what they can do and when they can do it after the BHR surgery.
Believe me so was I.
Forget it.
I think I'm doing a lot at this point 20+ months later.
But, the biggest thing if I were to go back, would have been to listen to my body more.
You WILL need strengthening in certain areas, I know I still do.
Push when you can, rest when you need to and you will progress.
Yes at 6 months+ you probably won't F it up unless you fall, but you are still not WHOLE.
Don't give up hope though, you will get back to where you want to be with time and dedication to strengthening...
Best.

Thanks, David.  Yes, this is not a competition.  Just because so and so climbed the stairs to the top of the Empire State Building a week after surgery does not mean your progress is hopeless. :)

You have the rest of your life. Trust your surgeon, be diligent with your PT and stretching and don't neglect your core and other body parts either.  You will be rewarded, if not now, later.

Agree completely David. Great post.

I'm still finding things that need work, feel great, but it is there. Nothing wrong with it.

Cool post.

I've actually enjoyed listening to my body and I'm enjoying my recovery.

We'll all get to where we want to be - just take your time.

David,

Great post, thank you. My surgeon (Dr. Gross) seems to be cautious about physical therapy. I took it very easy after surgery. When my six months was up I started lifting some little weight at the gym (instead of just going through the motions -  a cortisone shot in the shoulder helped too). But here I am at 14 months post-surgery and I am still leg pressing one plate a side (through a pretty small range of motion), when ten years ago it was five plates a side until my knees hit my chest.

Post-surgery when I was being overly cautious I sometimes felt guilty for not doing more in the way of PT or exercise, but I just knew my body needed to heal. Then, like magic, at just over a year, some athleticism started to return. Of course, now the other hip is quickly falling apart, but I digress...

We're  not professional athletes here, and do not need to get back on the field in six weeks.
