26 hours post-op. Nerve blocker has been turned off, so I can do PT. Fought through the stiffness and pain to walk 70ft. Tonight after PT I get the nerve block back.

Joint has zero pain. Pain is at incision site and swelling. Joint feels good. Doctor said this will be the worst day. Also said to make sure not to overdo anything so that there is little chance for dislocation.

This has been an emotional and physical fight.

The staff at SHARP/CORONADO have been amazing.  They also said that, in their experience, the younger patients have a tougher time in post-op do to the fact they have more muscle density than older patients.

So here is my story...

Post Op Day #1:

Hardest thing I have ever done.  My hip hurts, you cant sleep, and the swelling was bad.  I also went into "A-fib" for 8 hours, which the doctors weren't expecting with a 42 year old patient. So here cam the echocardiogram.  It shows I have BAV. Bicuspid Aortic Valve. Meaning, I have 2 leaflets in the valve instead of 3.  They said I have had it my entire life, and since there was no leaking, etc, I'm fine for now... OUCH

Things will get better. The first few days are rough for some people.

Welcome to the Bicuspid Valve club!  :D A-Fib - yea!  I didn't know I had one either until I flew to Belgium ready for my BHR surgery and they told me I had a heart murmur.  I asked if it would be a problem and they said NO. I was lucky to get a heart echogram for only $50 in Belgium and they told me that it would not bother me until I was 85.  I was only 61 then.  UGH - by 5 years later I had to have open surgery for a new tissue aortic valve.  It has been a-fib since then so don't feel bad.  I laid at the Cleveland Clinic for 8 days post heart surgery being in A-Fib.  I was suppose to go home on day 2.

Hopefully, it won't bother you any more, but if it does, you need to go to a heart doctor.  You have a much larger chance of having a stroke when you are in A-Fib.  The heart is churning around like an old washing machine and can throw a clot. 

I am not trying to scare you or worry you, but it is better to be safe than sorry. I take warfrin daily and other heart meds to try to keep my heart in normal rhythm.  Hopefully it won't bother you much more for many years.  It becomes worse as you get older and you are not older yet!

I just thought you would appreciate hearing from someone that has been there and done that with A-Fib   :P

Post-Op Day #5:

Last night I didn't need as man pain meds to sleep.  My swelling is going down and the staple site doesn't hurt as much.

Re: Bicuspid Aortic Valve.  The cardio docs at the hospital said that there is no leakage and my heart is not enlarged.  Told me that it really shouldn't bother me for another 10-20 years...

Today is a good day.
