Hi,

Just a quick post on my progress....
I am 36 and had a RBHR in feb this year,  which is approx 3 years after the initial diagnosis.
The surgeon was Dr Brockwell and the OP was done in the Mathilda Hospital in Hongkong.
The most remarkable thing is that it was all pretty unremarkable and I feel pretty much
fixed.

What I didn't do is any real physio, only walking, is that good or bad?. I just decided that if it feels ok, then is is ok and that walking and general pottering was enough.
I now want to get back into cycling - first on the road then mtb (after say 9 months). So far i've done a few gentle rides on the road and all feels good. Does anyone have any tips, words of wisdom etc...

What I do get a bit scared about is infection, especially as I live in mainland China and have to travel alot for work! For example I give all dogs (even little yappy ones) a wide berth!! Does anyone carry a crash kit e.g antiseptic creme , oral antibiotics with them just in case.

So to sum up so far so good....thanks for reading.

Hi Matt, there is nothing wrong with just walking, many doctors recommend that route. I am an older cyclist, road and mtb. I recommend not crashing, take it from me, not good. Cycling is a great workout that you can do for a lifetime. Take it slow and ease back into it, listen to your body and hip. If you feel pain, back off a bit. The fact that you felt good on some gentle rides is a very good sign. I was bitten by a dog a few years ago and went to an urgent care center for treatment and took antibiotics for a week. I'm not sure if that was necessary but didn't want to take a chance of infection.

Good luck.

Hi Matt,

Here's some information about infections that we're prone to that I've posted a couple of times, but may cover what you want:

I found this information and put it into an earlier post, but it speaks to your question.

According to this paper from the international journal of medical sciences, these are the bacteria associated with hip joint infections. We're interested in PJI (Prosthetic Joint Infections), NJI is natural joint infections, RA is reactive arthritis:

(source: http://www.medsci.org/v06p0234.htm )

The bacteria identified as causing prosthetic joint infections (PJI) in this study are:

  • Staphylococcus aureus - Staph infection, MRSA, etc.
  • Coagulase negative staphylococci
  • E. Coli
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Community acquired pneumonia and ventilator pneumonia

The main thing to look at both a bacterium's ability to infect the area and pathways to get there. It is treatable by antibiotics (since it's a bacteria, common cold is caused by viruses), so identifying it early is probably important. It's always good to check with the doctor.

The paper does say that prophylactic use of antibiotics was very effective in preventing infection, so our popping antibiotics before dental work, etc. is effective.

The common  cold is probably not going to be causing any issues with our hips. Not to be ignored, though - I once had a lung collapse since I ignored a cold / bronchitis / pneumonia. I take it easy now any time I have a cold, but not worried about the hips.

Dr. Gross recommends using an exercise bike only for 6 months just to avoid the risk of falling and damaging the bones.
