Dr Callander, Dr Schmalzried, or very experienced MD near San Francisco?

Hi,

I'm new to this site. I wanted to thank all the people who've contributed so much helpful information here!

Does anyone have any thoughts about Dr Callander, Dr Schmalzried, or a surgeon with a 1000 hip resurfacings near San Francisco?

I've seen Dr Callander for a consultation. He's done more than 500 resurfacings. He says that he has had just one revision (because the patient sustained trauma that fractured the resurfacing implant) and that he has never had a femoral neck fracture or component loosening. He seemed like a good doctor who would do his best for his patients.

I've read the chats and watched an interview with Dr Schmalzried from a few years back. He seemed like a very knowledgeable and competent surgeon. I know he was involved with the design and recall of the ASR device, but I don't know the details.  At the time of the chats and interview, he said that he had never had a femoral neck fracture (or component loosening?).  Does anyone know if that is still the case?

I've heard of the importance of selecting a surgeon with at least 1000 resurfacings, to help ensure a good result. Does anyone have anything to say about such a surgeon close to the San Francisco bay area?

Thanks very much in advance for any help you can offer.

Dean

Hi Dean and welcome! Sorry I can't really help much with the surgeon choice but your right to look for a surgeon who has done probably at least 1000, and more importantly with very very good results.

On the subject of femoral component loosening some devices are designed differently but the BHR is line to line (a very tight fit) and Mr McMinn and Ronan Treacy have no femoral component loosenings at very nearly 20 years with the bhr. So that must say something! :)
