Everything that I have read and been told says that it is not possible to revise the femoral side of a resurfacing to another resurfacing head. Someone might have figured a way, but everything that I have read and heard so far says no.

Thanks, that's not what I hoped to hear, but it is what I expected.   ;)

I don't know if these are available elsewhere on this site, or if it's taboo to attach files to posts, but I don't mind gentle handslaps if I'm in the wrong.  Attached are two papers describing a) survivalship at 12-15 years of 1000 BHRs all installed by a single surgeon and b) survivalship at 15-20 years of THRs in 132 patients under age 50 (181 hips).  This was pretty compelling in swaying me toward resurfacing instead of THR, regardless of what the doctor I saw Tuesday said.

Edit: Nevermind, each of the attachments were around 300k and the limit is 128k.  Perhaps I'll try later from home where I might be able to shrink them.

Here is one

You will find a lot of studies under General Hip Resurfacing Studies

Here are many medical studies about THRs on my THR site

I hope that helps.

Thanks for all your input folks.  Dr Pritchett has been incredibly magnanimous with his replies to my emails, including at 7 pm on a Friday night.  I'm going to go with Birmingham.  He does believe he could revise to Synovo in the unlikely event I have a reaction to the metal.

Next stupid question: How incredibly foolish of me would it be to plan an international trip two weeks after the first procedure?  I suspect a one stop flight from Seattle to Copenhagen would probably be miserable, and I'd want to be confident I won't need medical assistance while out of country, but is it remotely feasible or just completely absurd?

I flew home from Belgium to Argentina about two weeks after revision surgery. Not so bad. About 8 days after resurfacing I went from Belgium to Paris by train then to Barcelona by plane. After that we settled down in Barcelona for about a week (tourism). I used two crutches for all the longer walks we went on in Spain (after revision surgery I was down to one crutch in about five days) and was a little sore sometimes but I very much enjoyed the trip. After about a week in Barcelona (maybe 15 days post-op) we were back to Argentina (via Paris and New York) by plane. Once again: wasn't so bad (at this point, eight months later I can't recall any problems at all with the long flight and five hour drive home afterwards). So it's possible. However, we are all different and other people may have different things to say about their experiences post surgery.

Mate,
I would look at it this way. If you had to fly then so be it.
As Tim says there are people on here who have flown to and from having the operation. That would be a necessity.
But if its for any other reason I would have thought it a very bad idea.
What about the  increased risks of a DVT on a long haul like that. I was asked about any intention of flying in the coming months as part of my assessment, so I am guessing its not advised. But also sitting down in the same position for a long time would not be good. Then there's all the hanging around in airport security etc etc.

My latest recovery could not be going any better, walking 2 miles with sticks at the two weeks stage. But that's completely different to flying long distance.

Ask your doctor and see what he says.
