Hi Danny

That's great!  It's been a long road and I am glad you are doing what you want now and having fun at it!  Keep it up.  Always happy to have HR athletes tell us what's going on and how well that are doing.

Wow, Judo is a lot of hip movements especially tossing people around, that's great your able to do it again.

I practiced Muay Thai for 15 years, I would like to get back to it, but the kicks are intense. I am off restriction in 2 weeks from my surgery with Dr.Gross. I think I will start light boxing again and see how it goes.

Larry I did Thai for the best part of 20 years taught and fought it also. Hard kicking pad work is the only thing I don't do. I'll spar etc but don't think all that torque generated kicking pads and bags can be good for a engineered device....... I box grapple and will kick in sparing but that's the only thing I've ont gone back to.....

Yeah I cant imagine kicking 100+ swinging bag is good for any artificial hip. Also a teep kick into a bag, no good.

How did your hips feel as far as boxing. There is a lot of hip movement and torque when punching the bag correctly.

I agree I am 45 not worth the risk damaging a component with the kicks.

Thanks,

larry

Dannywayoflife

I'm boxing an aweful lot and apart from at the start when I could still feel weakness in my glutes I have zero problem. There is an aweful lot of movement when boxing correctly but far far less impact on the hips and I've never felt any detrimental effect to them from boxing, and I can hit pretty dam hard.......

Hey Danny

Congrats on the Judo competition. It's impressive even without the OA and two hips surgeries.

About not kicking the heavy bag or pads to protect the metal devices. Is there guidance from surgeons not to do this at this point? I'm not too convinced that hard kicking has any affect on the hips.

I myself have OA in both hips and kickbox 3 times a week. The classes are the real deal and by a two time former WKA champ who retired with one loss. All practice man. A real journeyman. Intense.

To be honest hitting the pads or bags themselves never cause me any pain when doing most kicks. This suggests to me that the impact on the hip joint is low. My shins receives impact, but by the time the force reaches my hip, which is imbedded, I don't usually feel any shock or pain.

The exception is front thrust kicks or side kicks which can sometimes cause some soreness. This suggests to me the direct impact kicks cause hip damage.

Leg kicks, body kicks, head kicks, or any kind of round kick on the bags have caused me pain too, but this disappeared with ramping up physio exercises for hip strengthening.

The reason I mention this is because it seems to me that hip pain from certain activities with OA are an indicator of what stresses the hip post surgery as well. Not the same but it would stand to reason an indicator.

Not every persons' hips are the same. Just something to think about. . .

I also think that using a theraband around my knees and doing the "four corners" makes a big difference for hip protection: standing side leg-outs with different pronations; lying adductor movement that mimicks the guard; front leg raises with/without ball; rear leg raises. Single Leg Squats. It's probably a good idea to do these exercises post-op too and if it's possible to kick a heavy bag without much or any pain with OA than the impact on the hips might be regarded as low. Just something to consider.

Interesting points Can Ice, I've never spoken to my surgeon specifically about Thai kicks into pads and bags. However I am certain that they played a large part in the original kit being worn out so its not reasonable to think a metal device would be any different......

Maybe you're right, Danny. Maybe you're right. The beauty of MMA anyways is that there are many ways to work around things!

Dannywayoflife

Exactly buddy :) as I say I can still kick 100% in sparing I just don't hit the pads and bags tons like I used to.......
