just saw on the golf channel that Davis Love will have his left hip resurfaced through the James Andrews Birmingham clinic - that’s a high end sports rehab and surgery clinic way beyond the price or insurance reaches of us mere mortals
They do pitchers arms such as tommy john ligament reconstruction and the full gamut of surgery for the sports rich athletes - they probably don’t do a lot of resurfacing
In the interview he was realistic about the timelines for his recovery
I wish him well as an advocate case to encourage resurfacing as choices for others that can choose this option

That's good news regarding positive press for resurfacing. I assume he's using Dr. Jeff Davis at that practice, which surprises me a bit, since I think he's "only" done a few hundred. You would have thought he would have gone with Dr. Su(who has treated other professional athletes), or one of the other highly experienced hip resurfacing surgeons. Nonetheless, as a golf enthusiast, and resurfacing proponent, I hope it works out well for him.

In following up on this, it turns out that Love had a THR. Interestingly, in his comments following surgery, Love incorrectly notes that he tried a "resurfacing" last year, which didn't help much. In reality, he had an arthroscopic procedure last year to clean out the joint, not a resurfacing. The fact that a world class athlete makes that kind of mistake about hip resurfacing just goes to show how far we still need to go to remedy the misinformation out there about hip resurfacing.

Yes I saw that Saf57 - very interesting that the high end James Andrews sports clinic did a THR for him - would think they would have the expertise or access to do a resurfacing option. Davis Love 3 fits the profile as an active 53 year old and he’s not exactly small boned unless his femoral head had some damage from the arthroscopic procedure?
We may never find out due to patient confidentiality whether it was misinformation on the option or the only option that he had

I originally spoke to  my GP about resurfacing thinking it was the clean out and wipe down with oily rag, on basis of what two golf buddies had told me.

Luckily for me, he put me straight: he had recently had bilateral from Mr McMinn.

Very surprised by the total hip, but as others will post, they are really very good, and twenty years is not unreasonable an expectation ...

As an aside, my buddies who had the arthroscopy took as long or longer than my BHR for recovery.

I'm not knocking THR's--there's certainly a use for them, particularly if one is not a candidate for a resurfacing. But why a 50 year old professional athlete who intends to continue competing at a high level would get a THR over a resurfacing makes no sense to me.
