ArthriticHip

8 weeks ago today I had my left hip resurfaced by Dr Books of the Cleveland Clinic. The first 6 weeks went very well. By my 6 week check up I was feeling really good. Up to that point I had strictly followed Dr's orders of a 75% weight bearing rule. The x-ray looked good, and nothing had shifted, which was a relief. Dr Brooks' assistant got me up and walking without crutches, and I must admit it was a little more difficult than I had hoped it would be. I had a pretty good limp. I was excited to get to walking without crutches so for the next couple days went to the local YMCA and started walking. My hip joint wasn't painful, but it seemed like everything else was. My calf became very sore. Then my lower back. Then my thigh muscle. About a week ago, I developed a pretty painful gnawing pain in my buttock that ran down the side of my leg. I believe it might have been my sciatic nerve? I decided to just take it easy for a few days and try to let all the ligaments and muscles settle down. Iced my hip/leg at night. I must say, this really seemed to work. The last 3 days have been progressively better, and today has been great. I would say that today is the first day that I feel like the joint feels "normal", and I feel like I'm better off then before surgery. Very exciting. I'm walking about 2 miles a day, just in my normal activity.  I'm going to continue to take it slowly, and as the muscles and tendons continue to heal I'll start some more extended walks and progress into more activity. For right now I'm thrilled to be getting around without any pain!
