Dear Sirs or Madams, I am scheduled for a resurfacing in Glasgow on the 9th of October 2019. I am a long distance runner with a diagnosed severe arthritic right hip. Post op, can I still participate in 1/2 Marathons to a good standard for my age? Are there any other runners on the forum able to provide me with information? I run 60 miles per week and it is a major part of my life, can I still do this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am 62 years' old and can run 1/2 marathons in under 100 minutes (due to limitations of the affected hip)!!

Hi, welcome autoazure. You should be able to get back to fast half-marathons within a year maximum, just take the first few months steady and build up as your tissues heal.
I have not yet raced a half since my BHR 5 hears ago but I have run the distance a couple of times, and raced 10 miles last weekend. Hip did hurt after the sprint finish but OK after a couple of days. I tend to stick to 5k racing, and have done over 100 on this hip. Just beware of the first 6 weeks, the femoral head is at its mist susceptible to snapping off if the bone is below par. Good luck!

Thank you Pete for replying to my enquiry. My op will be MOM (metal on metal) or similar to Andy Murray's. I would like more information from long distance running fanatics who run every day and race almost every month. Will I still be able to run in excess of 50/60 miles per week and indeed compete in half marathons? I have already stopped doing full marathons due to my hip problem.

I don't know of anyone on here or Hiprunner who does your sort of mileage. Even with two good hips I did not run that much, a 13 week build to London marathon only averaged 38 miles a week. I did run 100k in 12 hours, and consecutive marathons on a weekend once, but obviously not at racing pace.
I would have few qualms about training more frequently and over longer distances with my ceramic THR, now it has settled down, but my MoM resurfacing (like Andy Murray's) does make me a bit nervous on the wear and metal ions front. Luckily it only has to last another 20 years or so, and currently ion levels are fine, so the limiting factor for me is the need for recovery betweem runs. I think I could possibly justify 30 miles a week but at the moment it's more like 20 on average. Hope some of the other runners chip in with their own experiences, not sure you will get much encouragement though...

Hi Autoazure,

I'm getting surgery in Glasgow on the 28th Sept. Was meant to travel to Birmingham but Mr McMinn has hurt his back and requires a surgical fix. All surgeries canceled.. !!

Do you mind me asking which Surgeon you are seeing.. ?????
Thanks,

Frazer.

Hi Frazer, I am going through the NHS as I cannot afford the cost of private treatment. I have been waiting for more than 3 years' in order to be accepted for resurfacing. I was offered total hip twice however I refused as it was not guaranteed I could return to running! I am not too sure regarding stating the name of my Consultant however, I am sure a Google search of such would narrow down the possible Specialists. Best of luck with your future operation!
