Does anyone have a pre Hip resurfacing operation training plan?

Hello Everyone, I am new to this site today and looking for people to share my thoughts with and hopefully pick up some answers along the way. I am 53 yr old sporty female, who loves to run half marathons and cycle. In October I was hit with hip pain completely utterly out of the blue. It has been debilitating and is bone on bone. First steroid did not work at all and a second in December is making the pain less. I am getting a custom made polyethylene hip resurface in around April time but getting severely down as becoming unfit, with muscle wastage in the bad hip leg. I want to be fit for my operation in April but obviously hip pain stops me from doing cardio.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a exercise plan that I can do/stick to before my operation and most importantly for my mental health to keep me sane?

Has anyone heard of/or had nerve ablation to help with their pain?

Look forward to speaking with you all. AJ2311

I understand your frustration. There are members on here who can make better suggestions than I. In my run up to surgery I was in a similar situation to you. I was in so much pain I could do no exercise at all with my hip. I would swim almost every day, but I had to use a pull buoy between my legs as I couldn't even tolerate a flutter kick. Waling or anything more strenuous was out. Yet, despite no lower body exercise I did just fine after the surgery. So if you can't manage, don't despair. You'll still manage. My full (very long) story can be found here: https://surfacehippy.info/elizabeths-hip-resurfacing-dr-pritchett-2016/

I am curious about the custom made part. Can you elaborate on that?

Hello and thank you and I do hope that some members have pre operation training ideas!  That would be so helpful and give me inspiration.

My implant is being made out of polyethylene and is part of a trial to custom make them for females and smaller males.  Fingers crossed.

Thanks again

Interesting. I hope at some point you will/can share more details about the trial. Is it in the US, or elsewhere?

I don't know if you've seen it yet, but there is now a page for women on this site. https://surfacehippy.info/hip-resurfacing-for-women-whats-possible/

I hope this gives you inspiration for your future while waiting for others to chime in with exercises. As a some who has had a resurfacing I can tell you that my resurfaced hip feels and acts just like a normal hip that was never diseased. Good luck.

Like cat friend I swam as often as I could. I wanted to also spin, but my hips were in such bad shape I was advised against that to be sure I had enough femoral head left to resurface. (Yeah, that bad.) I added upper body weights instead and started pulling 1k in the pool each session.

If you aren't in too much pain and are not told not to, you could add abs.

Good luck!
